Lakewood, Ohio - In collaboration with Verb Ballets, Beck Center for the
Arts presents the extraordinary musical, Song and Dance, March 16
through April 7, 2007 on the Mackey Main Stage. Song and Dance will be
co-directed by Beck Artistic Director, Scott Spence and Verb Ballets
Artistic Director, Hernando Cortez.

Song and Dance has been called "a concert for theatre." Composed by
Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Don Black and Richard Maltby, it was
nominated for eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Original
Score and Best Choreography. This show is a unique musical
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_theater> comprised of two
distinctly different acts. =20

The first act is a one-woman show that is completely sung featuring
talented singer/actress Tracee Patterson*. The songs tell the story of
a young British <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom> woman who
comes to New York City in search of success and romance. Bernadette
Peters won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for this role in
the 1986 Broadway production. The second act is a ballet
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballet> choreographed
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choreographed> to Variations
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variations_%28album%29> , a piece composed
by Lloyd Webber for his cellist <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cellist>
brother, Julian <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_Lloyd_Webber> , and
performed by the dynamic dancers from Verb Ballets.=20

Spence is well known to Northeast Ohio audiences, most recently for his
widely acclaimed direction of A Man of No Importance and Urinetown The
Musical at Beck Center. He recently received the Northern Ohio Live
2006 Award of Achievement in Theater. Under his artistic direction,
Beck Center was named as the "Best Theatre Company" in 2002 and 2004 by
Cleveland Scene.

Hernando Cortez has performed in leading roles with New York dance
companies and on national tours. He continues to be commissioned to
choreograph new works by regional dance companies and universities
nationwide. A faculty member of many prestigious dance schools, Hernando
received the 1996 New York Dance and Performance Award, the 1997 Dance
Magazine Award and 2004 Northern Ohio Live Award of Achievement.
