POSITION: Full Time Dance Staff Musician Beginning Fall 2007
RESPONSIBLITIES: To accompany modern dance, ballet, and composition
or jazz classes as assigned; to teach Music for Dancers; to assist in the
selection and development of music for faculty and student choreography; to
maintain and extend relationships for the Dance Division with other academic
units and area professionals; to supervise, instruct and develop part-time
staff accompanists.
QUALIFICATIONS: Masters Degree and experience accompanying and composing for
modern dance and ballet; teaching experience; competency in accompanying
jazz or African Dance; technology skills in composition, adaptation and
sound editing.
PROGRAM: The Dance Division, located in the School of Theatre and
Dance, offers a B.F.A. degree with majors in modern dance
Performance/choreography and in Education, leading to a multi-age license in
the State of Ohio. While focused in modern dance, there is strong support
in ballet and jazz, in addition to requirements in improvisation,
composition, movement sciences, history, notation and production. A minimum
of four concerts are held annually, including faculty-choreographed, Student
Dance Festival, B.F.A. Senior Projects and a performance by the Kent Dance
Ensemble, a pre-professional repertory and touring company. The Dance
Division includes approximately 75 dance majors, minors and Musical Theatre
Majors, and serves over 1000 non-majors annually with 5 full-time and 4-7
part time faculty and 1-3 part time staff musicians. The Dance Division
enjoys a strong and cordial relationship with the Theatre Division, which
supports the major dance concerts. The Division is an accredited member of
the National Association of Schools of Dance and participates in the
American College Dance Festival Association.
UNIVERSITY: Kent State University is a large residential university
consisting of over 100 buildings, approximately 32,000 students on the Kent
and seven regional campuses and a variety of other educational
opportunities. The University functions on the academic semester system and
has over 170 fields of study for undergraduate and graduate programs, as
well as continuing education and social activities ranging from theatre and
concerts to sporting events. Fine dining, entertainment and cultural
facilities are also available in Cleveland, Canton and Akron, which are in
close proximity to the campus. The city of Kent, with a population of
30,000 offers attractive housing, an excellent school system, recreational
facilities and fine local parks.
