Workshop Players Theatre's production of Over the Tavern, after a very
successful audition session this weekend, is extending its search for just
the right young men to play Rudy, the main character, and Georgie, his
retarded/autistic brother. Both these roles are challenging and will afford
young actors an incredible learning experience. Some details of the roles:
Rudy, played at around age 12-14, is a precocious, bright and funny boy
around whom the play revolves. Rudy's innate curiosity, coupled with his
"class clown" sense of humor, causes him to question everything around him
from his family to his faith, and ultimately transforms not only Sister
Clarissa, his autocratic teacher, but his parents and siblings as well.
Rudy also gets the opportunity to imitate Ed Sullivan, a rather famous
television figure of the 1950's and 1960's. Rudy can be effectively played
by someone a few years older, as well.
Georgie's chronological age can be played somewhere between 9 and 15; his
mental age is somewhere around 3 or 4. While Georgie is non-verbal (except
for a few well-placed words) his mental awareness is excellent and his
actions in the script suggest what we today know as autism, rather than
mental retardation. The actor playing Georgie has an opportunity to play a
totally different character from any he's probably ever played, and can
learn that small, consistent actions and character development can express a
character as well as, and in some cases better than, words.
An additional audition session has been scheduled for Thursday, April 26,
2007 from 7-9 PM at the theatre, 44800 Middle Ridge Road, Amherst, OH
44001. Persons who cannot make these auditions may make arrangements to
meet with the director individually, as well, at a mutually agreeable time.
For further information please contact the director, Don Wozniak, at
440.244.3960 or cen55422 at centurytel.net.
