Hello Jennifer, like I mentioned before, LA is mostly about television,
commercials and films. I would say about 85%. This is the only reason for
going to LA. You have to look at this business for what it is. All of the
actors who have ever made it in Hollywood ONLY came to LA to be seen on
screen because of the financial rewards that acting can offer those who have
the talent and skill to perform. But they have put their dues in on stage
before. You have to see this vision of structure and understand that this is
what you go there for. Yes, there are theaters in town that I would suggest
you perform in while you're there to continue working on your craft and
while the auditions for the commercials, TV and film are pending.

I would also suggest that when you get there to try and become a member of a
comedy troop or theater company or anything that is group related with
other WORKING actors because you will need the thespian family support and
grounding. I belong to an African-American theater company (www.laaarep.com
<http://www.laaarep.com/> ) which produces original works and is directed by
and for the members therein. I'm also the PR Director for the company and
this all helps me as a black actor understand who I am in this business and
to become extremely proficient in comprehending issues of my environment as
stage productions. We train together, play together and perform together as
a group to keep our acting chops working while we are waiting for the
auditions to land. I do however also perform in non-African American theater
performances at other theaters, only I'm not a member. REMEMBER, in LA you
are what you look like and not what you think should be, find your
stereotype and be prepared to play it successfully for about 3 years until
you can make authoritative changes. But continue working diligently at what
you strive to become. LA is all about perception. You are typecast when
walking in the room within the first 10 seconds of your audition-Believe It!

Another part of your time in LA will be networking and socializing with the
industry folks. Finding free and low cost workshops from directors and
casting agents on the weekends, getting headshots (color only), getting
business cards (w/ headshots on them), and auditing classes (commercial,
television, film, stage). There are certain techniques you will have to
learn and adjust to in order to be successful as these different entities.
You will be also be working out at 24 hour fitness, studying (Stanislavski,
Meisner, Uta Hagen, etc.) , reading, focusing, but also taking some down
time every once in a while. In my opinion, and from experience, if you find
yourself at home in your apartment before 10pm more that 3 nights per week,
YOU ARE NOT WORK AS AN ACTOR IN LA! There is too much too be doing for you
to be at home. I take acting classes 3 nights a week and go to the gym 3
days a week while working a full time job and auditioning during lunch
breaks and work shopping on the weekends. I'm also getting my MBA online
with University if Phoenix!

Last and final, CHP's are California Highway Patrol(men). Remember the
television show CHiP's,...you know..dun, dun....da, da duuuuun.....Punch and
John, the two guys on the motorcycles...well they are really out there. And
yes, if you can get away with saying that you are a temporary resident of
California, then you might be able to keep you old registration. But
remember, 5-8 family's moved to LA every month and the CHP's here this same
story from everyone.

I hope this information is helpful and read this article from Backstage.com.
It should be very helpful. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

hi, oliver. thanks so much for all the info and advice! to be honest, i'm
definitely prepared for the move in terms of money. i've got about $15,000
saved and i'm going to be living with my boyfriend who works as a teacher so
i'm not really concerned about money. and i've lived in nyc and europe so
i'm used to big-city life and how expensive it can be. the reason i said a
"somewhat limited budget" is because i don't want to be pretend like i can
afford to spend an unlimited amount on acting classes when that just isn't
the case. i don't want to blow through $15,000 in a few months and then be
like, "now what?" i will be driving out to LA b/c obviously i will need my
car, but i'm going with my mom, my boyfriend, and his mom... so the 4 of us
will be splitting those travel costs.

i hadn't planned on pursuing a career in theater, i guess i just thought it
would be a good place to start since it's probably not as competitve as
screen acting. if nothing else, i figured a theater would be a good place to
take some acting classes. am i way off base here?

i do have a few more questions for you. what the heck are CHPs, and what do
you mean vehicle registration is due within 10 days? i was under the
impression that i could keep my ohio plates as long as i claimed that my
residence in california is temporary. which it just may turn out to be.
