I have to add to what Oliver mentions. I'm a California native who spent th=
e
first 21 years of my life in SoCal and moved to Cleveland almost two years
ago (June 18th will be the date), and I really wouldn't dream of moving
back. Cleveland is an awesome city (region) that has a horrible self-esteem
issue and even worse PR, but anyway...

I'm not an actor -- and, in fact, have no professional experience in any
talent-related field -- so I can't really speak about the professional
aspects, but, Oliver makes valid points that bear repeating, plus I have a
few of my own

* Southern California is, above all else, about image. In the eyes of
everyone else, you are what you look like (and to an extent what car you
drive and where you live). This is one of the Californiaisms I'm having the
hardest time breaking free from.

* Cleveland has a much stronger live theater/performing arts scene (IMO, of
sourse) than LA -- the focus in LA is definately film/television, and
audiences have a completely different mindset (and to an extent, some
portion of the audience are going just to uphold their image, see bullet
#1). About 1 1/2 hours south of LA you'll find La Jolla (home to the La
Jolla playhouse where I had the pleasure of attending Jersey Boys innagural
and pre-Brodaway run, among other well known works in their history) and Sa=
n
Diego's Balboa Park (With the Old Globe theater complex). I would think tha=
t
both would be worth shopping yourself around to.

* Everything moves faster in California. People, decisions, traffic. This i=
s
the one bane of my Ohio existance -- California's 65-70 MPH speed limits
translate to 75-90 MPH actual speeds.

* The CHP really isn't as bad a Oliver makes it out to be. As far as
California law goes, you have 20 days from the date that you establish
residence in California (that is, purchasing a home, signing a lease, or
accepting a job -- even if you're only temporarially residing in CA, if
you're there for 20 or more days you have to register) to register your
vehicle in California and obtain a California Drivers License. Other than
that, they pretty much leave you alone. Unless you're driving recklessly or
exceeding 100 MPH (no, not joking here -- 100 MPH is the "hard line") in
general the CHPs policy is not to touch you unless you're noticably
exceeding the flow of traffic regardless of the posted speed limit.
Translation: If everyone else is doing 75 you're safe up to 80 or so, even
if the limit is 65.

See this page for vehicle registration information:
http://www.chp.ca.gov/prog/cheaters.cgi, see also http://www.dmv.ca.gov/

The CHP and FSP (Freeway Service Patrol -- basically tow trucks) are
basically there to help you; if you have a flat tire or your hood up and a
CHP officer sees you 90% of the time they will stop and assist. (As a fun
aside, you can check out the CHP's displatch calls at http://cad.chp.ca.gov=
 --
once you get used to the geography, it can give you an idea of what areas t=
o
avoid)

* Learn to hate the term "SigAlert". A SigAlert is an unplanned lane closur=
e
of 30 minutes or more, usually due to a bad accident, something falling on
the road, whatever. The translation is traffic nightmare in the area.

* In-N-Out Burger is (IMHO) the best and most reasonably priced fast-food
burger and fries anywhere. It's one of the two reasons I still regularly
travel back to California (family being the other :) )

* The cost of living is insane. As a rough estimate multiply the "Cleveland
Price" using a multiplier of somewhere between 1.5x and 2x.

If you have any questions related to the living, feel free to email me
directly -- My family is still in SoCal (Long Beach and Temecula) and I
travel back there frequently.

s a teacher so i'm not really concerned about money. and i've lived=
in nyc and europe so i'm used to big-city life and how expensive it ca=
n be. the reason i said a "somewhat limited budget" is because i =
don't want to be pretend like i can afford to spend an unlimited amount=
on acting classes when that just isn't the case. i don't want to b=
low through $15,000 in a few months and then be like, "now what?"=
i will be driving out to LA b/c obviously i will need my car, but i'm =
going with my mom, my boyfriend, and his mom... so the 4 of us will be spli=
tting those travel costs.
