UNREQUESTED, UNOFFICAL  REVIEW OF
 BIG RIVER, THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN
at Mercury Summer  Theater
By Un-credentialed Reviewer, Mary Faktor (The Actor ;-)
Last Friday night I had the pleasure of attending the opening night=20
performance of=20
BIG RIVER, THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN at Mercury Summer Stock Theate=
r.

I had seen a different production of this show 10 years ago, and quite=20
frankly hadn't cared for it,=20
but I had heard good things about Mercury and how they put on great shows=20
with a "shoe-string budget,"=20
so I decided on supporting local live theater instead of local cinema. I was=
=20
thrilled with my choice!
=20
THIS SHOW IS FABULOUS! Everyone in the cast was "dead-on" with their=20
characters, the
musical numbers were well-sung and choreographed, The sets were simple but=20
effective and the=20
extensive costumes (by Rosemary Masterson) were every bit as good as anythin=
g=20
seen in any full-scale=20
professional production.

Director Pierre-Jacques Brault did a fantastic job of grooming his actors to=
=20
add tremendous=20
humor and multiple dimensions to their characters. The audience had no=20
chance to be bored.=20
The scene changes were quick and smooth (no small feat considering the stage=
=20
is very small
and has no wing space or fly gallery.) Unlike some local productions who=20
have a healthy
budget for costumes, sets, props and crew, Mercury handles these challenges=20
with amazing=20
capability.=20
=20
Loads of humor was scattered throughout the dialog. =20
Mark Cipra's hysterical performance as Huck's dead-beat drunken "pap" singin=
g
"Dad-burned Gov-ment" alone was worth the price of admission. =20
Charles Walker (Jim) was very powerful in his rendition of =E2=80=9CFree At=
 Last=E2=80=9D.=20
Daniel Marshall (Duke) and Arthur Wise (King) were as the conniving con-men=20
acting as royalty.=20
Corey Joseph Mach was deliciously mischievous as Tom Sawyer, and Brian=20
Marshall was=20
absolutely charming as Huck Finn. And, whomever it was from the ensemble wh=
o=20
played
"the young fool" singing ARKANSAS...deserves a very special mention for=20
providing the
audience with such a hearty laugh.=20
=20
My only two complaints were 1. the discomfort I felt hearing the "N" word so=
=20
many times...
(even though I accept Mark Twain wrote in the language of the times, I=20
thought it to be over-used=20
unnecessarily) and 2. The lack of a curtain, scrim or flat to cover the=20
orchestra and bright light which=20
was distracting to the audience throughout the performance.=20

SUMMARY:=20
Pierre Brault and his energized, enthusiastic and talented cast present an=20
absolutely charming=20
evening out with the family or date. Tickets are a reasonable $12-$15...So=20
skip the cinema=20
or DVD rental and have a fun night out with Mercury Summer Stock's productio=
n=20
of=20
=E2=80=98BIG RIVER, THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN=E2=80=99
Parma Little Theatre, 6285 W. 54th Street, Parma,=20
Now through June 30.  216-771-5862.
