Help bring the CAPPIES to Cleveland

  What are the CAPPIES?
The CAPPIES is a national organization that encourages, assists and ultimately sanctions cities to stage an awards program for high school theater. The vision would be to create a CAPPIES award show for all of Cleveland. It would judge both dramas and musical within a school year and have a show in the spring. (If this happens this year we would start with musicals and expand next school year to include dramas.)

The neat – and well orchestrated twist – to the CAPPIES is that the students are the judges. Each school has faculty members who coordinate and attend with the students. The teachers provide guidance on the process and the spirit of the judging, but not how to vote. More than one school watches and votes on a performance so there is balance in the judging.

The entire process is organized through online registration and voter tallying software developed by the CAPPIES national office. It makes for a very efficient process with a high degree of integrity. The talk at the awards shows – as it should be - is about the talent seen in the shows and not the process behind it.

To find out more about go to their web site: http://www.cappies.com/

What is needed to get the CAPPIES started

  Finding the producer
When I discussed the entire process with Bill Strauss, one of the principles of the CAPPIES, he mentioned that it requires someone to be the 'executive producer' (my term).

They essentially take responsibility for building the program by contacting schools, getting them signed up and trained, then coordinating the judging process and ultimately the awards show.

Ideal candidates – stay at home parents of older kids or retired teachers who love theater.

Is there someone that comes to mind? Give them a call and talk it over with them. Have them check out the CAPPIES web site and if there interested give me a call.

I considered the idea - serving as the executive producer - but I talked with Bill in May. It’s now September. I would like to see this off the ground before my son graduates. He’s a freshman this year.

  Finding schools willing to participate
Another important component is getting the active participation of the schools. Each school requires a commitment on the part of two faculty members. They serve as the liaison to the CAPPIES steering committee, they process all information needed from the school – typically by uploading content into the CAPPIES web-based system, they secure student judges, they train them and accompany them at least three other high school shows.

Theater teachers – are you interested? Check out the web site and if you have interest in being a participating school let me know.

  Students
If having an awards show for just high school theater sounds appealing to you, talk with your theater instructors as well as producers and directors you have worked with. See if they are interested in helping out or if they know someone who might fit.
