FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Acclaimed Musicians Present Concerts at the Oberlin Conservatory of =20=

Music

to Promote HIV/AIDS Awareness

Renowned pianist Barbara Nissman appears with Oberlin Chamber =20
Orchestra Sept. 30; Salman Ahmad of famed Pakistani band Junoon =20
performs Oct. 5

OBERLIN, OHIO (September 14, 2007)=97Two upcoming concerts presented at =20=

the Oberlin Conservatory of Music will focus much-needed attention on =20=

HIV/AIDS awareness.

Acclaimed pianist Barbara Nissman, hailed by one New =20
York critic as among =93the last pianists in the grand Romantic =20
tradition of Liszt, Rachmaninoff, and Rubinstein,=94 and considered a =20=

=93magnificent interpreter=94 of the music of Alberto Ginastera=97by no =20=

less an authority than the late composer himself=97will perform his =20
Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 28, with the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, =20
under the baton of Bridget-Michaele Reischl. The free concert is =20
Sunday, September 30, at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel, and the program =20
also includes Johannes Brahms=92 Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 68. =20
Portions of the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be displayed in Finney =20
Chapel during the concert. Seating for this free concert is by =20
general admission.

Following the concert, the AIDS Quilt will be moved to Oberlin=92s =20
Student Union, in Wilder Hall, where it will be on view Monday, =20
October 1, through Sunday, October 6, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On Friday, October 5, 2007, at 8 p.m. in Warner Concert Hall, singer, =20=

guitarist, composer, storyteller, HIV/AIDS activist, and documentary =20
filmmaker Salman Ahmad, of the famed Pakistani band Junoon, will =20
present a concert of his Sufi and rock-infused music, accompanied by =20
tabla. The New York Times music critic Jon Pareles has written that =20
in Pakistan, Ahmad, who bridges East and West, Islam and =20
Christianity,=93has become a figure like Bono of U2: a positive-=20
thinking, hugely popular rock musician whose songs address both =20
spiritual and social questions.=94

In addition to his performance at Oberlin, Ahmad will screen one of =20
his documentary films, Islamabad Rock City (2001), about the rock =20
group Junoon. A United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for HIV/AIDS, =20
Ahmad uses his celebrity status to work for the positive image of =20
Islam abroad and to create awareness about HIV/AIDS in South Asia. =20
His concert will include a talk that will address, among other =20
things, his upcoming tour of South Asia, the Al-Vida to AIDS College =20
Tour.

General admission tickets for Salman Ahmad are $5 for =20
those with an Oberlin College I.D. and $8 for the general public, and =20=

can be purchased at Oberlin=92s Central Ticket Service by calling =20
800-371-0178 or 440-775-8169. Local HIV/AIDS organizations will join =20
campus organizations with informational displays in the lobby.

The Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, with pianist Barbara Nissman, is =20
sponsored by the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Salman Ahmad=92s =20
performance is sponsored by Oberlin=92s Center for Leadership in Health =20=

Promotion. Both concerts are presented with the support of the Robert =20=

James Frascino AIDS Foundation.

Barbara Nissman

Well known for her definitive recordings of the complete piano music =20
of Alberto Ginastera and the complete piano sonatas of Sergei =20
Prokofiev (recently reissued on Pierian Records), Barbara Nissman=92s =20=

roots remain within the 19th century. Her connection to Romantic =20
pianism reaffirms her approach to the 20th-century pianism of =20
Prokofiev and Ginastera. Her international career was launched by =20
Eugene Ormandy who had previously engaged her as soloist with the =20
Philadelphia Orchestra. She has performed with the leading orchestras =20=

of Europe and America including the London Philharmonic, the Royal =20
Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony, the Rotterdam Philharmonic, and the =20
Munich Philharmonic; in the U.S. she has appeared with the New York =20
Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, the =20
Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, the National Symphony =20
and the Cleveland Orchestra, among others. She has worked with some =20
of the major conductors of our time, including Eugene Ormandy, =20
Riccardo Muti, and Leonard Slatkin.

Salman Ahmad

Salman Ahmad is guitarist and composer of the Sufi rock band Junoon, =20
which was founded in the early 1990s and is now a phenomenon in the =20
South Asian music scene and beyond, performing live at BBC=92s Mega =20
Mela, the MTV music awards in India, and the United Nations=92 General =20=

Assembly in New York. With Junoon, Mr. Ahmad has been increasingly =20
involved in humanitarian efforts, playing at the Building Human =20
Rights Culture Gala and the Empower Peace program with students in =20
Pakistan, and fund-raising for Hurricane Katrina victims. Most =20
recently, in coordination with the United Nations, he has joined =20
relief operations for the October 2005 earthquake victims in northern =20=

Pakistan.
He has produced two documentary films. The Rock Star =20
and the Mullahs tracks Ahmad=92s visit to the northern Pakistani town =20=

of Peshawar, where he directly challenges the local Muslim clergy who =20=

have banned all forms of music. His most recent film, Muslims in =20
America: It=92s My Country Too, uncovers the authentic spirit of =20
American Muslims and their experience wrestling with the personal and =20=

social consequences of the 9/11 attacks.
He is a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations, =20
acting as the U.S. national spokesperson in the fight against HIV/=20
AIDS. He is also on the board of directors of Breakthrough, an =20
international human rights organization that uses education and =20
popular culture to promote values of dignity, equality, and justice.

HIV/AIDS in America

According to statistics published by the Centers for Disease Control =20
and Prevention, more than 1,000,000 Americans are living with HIV, =20
and one quarter of these are unaware of their infection. In addition, =20=

of the approximately 40,000 new HIV infections that occur each year =20
in the United States, half occur in young adults under the age of 25. =20=

More than 40 million people throughout the world live with HIV.

Oberlin College has received a grant from the Robert James Frascino =20
AIDS Foundation to increase HIV/AIDS awareness and education for =20
students and members of the community through several initiatives, =20
including high-profile musical events and guest speakers.

The Robert James Frascino AIDS Foundation

Robert J. Frascino, M.D., a member of Oberlin College=92s Board of =20
Trustees, cofounded the Robert James Frascino AIDS Foundation in 1999 =20=

with his life partner, Steven M. Natterstad, M.D. After earning a =20
Bachelor of Arts degree in biology at Oberlin College in 1974 and a =20
medical degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, =20
he completed his postdoctoral clinical immunology/allergy fellowship =20
at the University of California, San Francisco. Frascino then spent =20
14 years in private practice and as an associate clinical professor =20
of medicine in Stanford University Medical Center=92s Division of =20
Immunology, Rheumatology, and Allergy. In 1991, while performing a =20
routine medical procedure on a patient with AIDS, he sustained a =20
hollow bore needle stick and laceration and converted to HIV =20
positive. =93I had suddenly transitioned from an HIV specialist =20
physician who provides care to an HIV-positive person who would =20
eventually need care,=94 he told an interviewer for the Oberlin Alumni =20=

Magazine. =93My experience has provided me with a unique and privileged =20=

view of the pandemic from both sides of the examination table. It =20
allows me to personally address this illness with the experience and =20
mind of an HIV physician specialist, but with the eyes, heart, and =20
soul of an HIV patient.=94

Frascino retired from his medical practice in 1996 to =20
concentrate his efforts on AIDS awareness, fund raising, and =20
teaching. Also in 1996, he returned to giving classical piano =20
concerts, having studied piano at the Conservatory while at Oberlin. =20
A series of fundraising concerts to benefit AIDS service =20
organizations, called A Concerted Effort, evolved into the Robert =20
James Frascino AIDS Foundation. A resident of Los Altos, California, =20
Frascino is the founder of two medical clinics devoted to the =20
comprehensive and compassionate care of people living with HIV/AIDS. =20
With Dr. Natterstad, also an HIV/AIDS physician specialist and =20
concert pianist, he has raised more than $1,000,000 for AIDS service =20
organizations worldwide.

Foundation, please visit www.concertedeffort.org/.

1867, is the oldest continuously operating conservatory in the United =20=

States. The Conservatory is renowned internationally as a =20
professional music school of the highest caliber and has been =20
pronounced a =93national treasure=94 by the Washington Post. Oberlin=92s =
=20
alumni have gone on to achieve illustrious careers in all aspects of =20
the serious music world. Many of them have attained stature as solo =20
performers, composers, and conductors, among them Jennifer Koh, =20
Steven Isserlis, Denyce Graves, Franco Farina, Christopher Robertson, =20=

Lisa Saffer, George Walker, Christopher Rouse, David Zinman, and =20
Robert Spano. All of the members of the Mir=F3, Pacifica, Juillard and =20=

Fry Street quartets, among others, include Oberlin alumni, who also =20
can be found in major orchestras and opera companies throughout the =20
