Beck Center for the Arts presents Holy Ghosts, a dark comedy written by award-winning playwright, Romulus Linney, Sept. 28 - Oct. 21 in the Studio Theater. Directed by Matthew Wright, Holy Ghosts tells the story of a runaway wife, an abusive husband and a Southern Pentecostal sect whose members speak in tongues and practice snake handling as the ultimate test of their faith.

A young woman runs away to escape her mistake-of-a-marriage to a broken and thoughtless man. She seeks refuge amongst the members of a fundamentalist religious group in the rural South. The play questions the true meaning of faith as the husband, looking to retrieve his runaway wife by force, is - much to his own amazement - converted to a true believer.

Holy Ghosts is sponsored by Cox Communications, FreeTimes and WCPN 90.3 ideastream. Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $28 for adults, $25 for seniors, and $17 for students (22 and under). Special group rates are available for groups of 13 or more. Rush tickets for students (22 and under with I.D.) are offered for $10 each on Sundays only, 30 minutes prior to curtain, based on availability. To reserve tickets call the Beck Center box office at 216-521-2540 or online at www.beckcenter.org <http://www.beckcenter.org/> . Convenient on-site parking is free. A Note from the Director ~ Matthew Wright

" And these signs shall follow them that believe: in my name shall they cast out devils. They shall speak with new tongues. They shall take up serpents. And if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them. They shall lay hands upon the sick, and they shall recover."
The Book of Mark, Chapter 16, verses 17 and 18

Faith, according to Webster's, is a "firm belief in something for which there is no proof." Most of us, in moments of total candor, would admit that we wish desperately to believe that ours is a benevolent and forgiving universe...that we have faith that life's mysteries will be revealed and that our struggles are not in vain. Such faith may sustain us and give us courage to face our own darkness, whatever it may be. Without such faith we are bereft of meaning in a chaotic world and have naught for company but anxiety, depression and the constant hollow knowledge of our own mortality. With faith, with belief, comes the courage to carry on.

Romulus Linney has written a play about faith, about the universal human need to believe. And like all things human, this play is terribly funny and terribly sad and full of fear and hope. The people who populate the world of this play are not like those with whom we come in contact every day; these are a people who test their faith in ways unimaginable to most of us. And yet the motivations that drive their belief - their faith - are absolutely universal. In getting to know these folks, the cast and I have laughed with them, cried with them and stood in awe of them. We invite you to do the same. Welcome to the world of the Holy Ghosts.
