The 2007-2008 Stocker Arts Center season continues with a wonderful film and live orchestra performance this week!

"After The Wedding"
Friday, October 5, 2007 - 7:30pm

2006 (R) 119 min. Denmark/subtitles
Director: Susanne Bier
Cast: Mads Mikkelsen, Rolf Lassgard, Stine Christensen

Jacob Peterson runs a struggling orphanage in India. Desperate to save it from closure, he returns to Denmark to meet Jørgen, a wealthy businessman and potential benefactor. Jørgen offers Jacob a seemingly innocent invitation to attend his daughter's wedding. What appears to be nothing more than a friendly gesture sets in motion a devastating series of surprises, revelations and confessions that will forever change their lives. This is a movie about family ties and whether they have meaning. Although Jacob has never been married, he finds himself torn between two families: the orphanage and one in Denmark. Circumstances place him in the eye of a dilemma and he must face a decision that will damn some part of his soul regardless of what he decides. People need him in both India and Denmark and deciding where his loyalties and his future lie represent the core of AFTER THE WEDDING's drama and ultimate meaning. Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.

"The characters are fascinating and nuanced and the actors go for broke...it really is possible that one or two scenes will stay with you for the rest of your life." - Mick LaSalle, SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

"A rich, intricate and very gripping movie." - Richard Schickel, TIME MAGAZINE

Lorain County Civic Orchestra in Concert
Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 7:30pm

Johann Sebastian Bach. Cantata No. 140: Wachet Auf
Guest Artists: Janine Porter, Thomas Wojnarowski, LCCC Collegiate Chorale

Sergei Prokofiev. Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67
Guest Artists: Elyria High School Chamber Strings

Written slightly more than two hundred years apart - 1731 and 1936 - these two works share the mission of translating abstract concepts into simple, approachable performances.

In the case of Cantata No. 140, Johann Sebastian Bach expanded Jesus' parable of The Ten Virgins (Matt 25:1-13) into a "love" dialog between the soul (as bride) and Jesus (as bridegroom). The LCCC Collegiate Chorale (Nancy Davis, Director), and Janine Porter and Thomas Wojnarowski (The Count and Countess from last year's hit production of "The Marriage of Figaro") will join in the performance.

Peter and the Wolf. In 1936 Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned by the Central Children's Theatre in Moscow to write a new musical symphony for children. Joseph Stalin had called on Soviet artists to create works for the people: simple and understandable. Intrigued by the invitation, Prokofiev wrote both the story and the music for Peter and the Wolf in just four days. Because of this, it could be said that the symphony was actually "Communist inspired." The Elyria High School Chamber Strings (Thomas Flowers, Director) will join in the performance.

Tickets: $7.00/Adults; $6.00 LCCC Students, Staff & Seniors 65+; $5.00/Groups of 15 or more
