DOCUWEEK TOUR COMING TO CLEVELAND
5 films to screen at the Cedar Lee Theatre
(Cleveland Heights, OH) - The Cedar Lee Theatre located at 2163 Lee Rd,
Cleveland Hts., OH 44118 will be hosting the International Documentary
Association (IDA) DocuWeek from October 26 to November 1, 2007. DocuWeek is
designed to help excellent documentaries not only reach an audience but also
to allow them to be eligible for Academy Award consideration.
Due to recent changes in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences
rules for the 2007 Oscar nominations, documentary features are now required
to be exhibited in at least 14 venues in at least 10 different states.
Qualifying films must also screen a minimum of two times per day for at
least three consecutive days. (Complete rules can be found at
http://www.oscars.org/80academyawards/rules/rule12.html.) Since this can be
a hurdle that not all filmmakers can clear, the IDA has created the DocuWeek
program to allow these films to meet these new criteria.
The following films will be screening as part of DocuWeek:
The Price of Sugar, Uncommon Productions/Mitropoulos Films
Director/Producer: Bill Haney Producer:Eric Grunebaum
90 min. Dominican Republic/Spain
In the Dominican Republic, tourists flock to pristine beaches unaware that a
few miles away thousands of dispossessed Haitians have toiled under armed
guard on plantations harvesting sugarcane. They work grueling hours and
frequently lack decent housing, clean water, electricity, education or
healthcare. The Price of Sugar follows Father Christopher Hartley, a
charismatic Spanish priest, as he organizes some of this hemisphere's
poorest people and challenges powerful interests profiting from their work.

personal odysseys.

Director/Producer: Joan Brooker-Marks Producer: Walter Marks
80 min. USA
Both hero and villain, tireless civil rights advocate and purveyor of
pornography, the always controversial Larry Flynt is the subject of Joan
Brooker-Marks' documentary. Delving beyond Flynt's political career, the
film offers an intimate glimpse into the publisher's personal life,
including the assassination attempt that left him paralyzed, and his first
wife's battle with AIDS. Ultimately, Brooker-Marks delivers the full,
unvarnished story of one of America's most unlikely defenders of civil
liberties.

ability, who learn to make the most of their gifts in an acclaimed public
school jazz program in Jacksonville, Florida. From their early, squeaky
scales to their soaring improvisational solos, we have a front-row seat for
their fascinating transformation.
