THE MANDEL JCC presents A SHAYNA MAIDEL

The first winner of The Mandel Jewish Community Center¹s Dorothy Silver
Playwriting Competition ‹ A Shayna Maidel by Barbara Lebow ‹ returns in a
production directed by Fred Sternfeld and presented in association with
Tri-C Eastern Campus Theatre Arts.

Literally translated as ³a pretty girl,² A Shayna Maidel conveys the
aftermath of the Holocaust through a poignant, imaginatively conceived
examination of one divided family's experience. Two sisters separated in
childhood‹one raised in America, the other in Poland‹are reunited in New
York City in 1946 in the wake of World War II and the Holocaust. After a
15-year separation and the loss of most family members, they are nearly
strangers and struggle to reconnect.

Subtitled ³The Life of a Family,² A Shayna Maidel was widely produced by
America's leading regional theatres and went on to become a long-running
Off-Broadway success. It was also adapted into a Hallmark Hall of Fame
movie, Miss Rose White. Critics have lauded it as a ³testamentary
classicŠwrenching and uplifting.² The Los Angeles Times described A Shayna
Maidel as ³finely crafted and emotionally hyperchargedŠit offers the kind of
rich and poignant characters that are a gift to actor and audience alike.²
