[NEohioPAL] short notice good gig

I used to do community theater in the days when there still was such a thing, before it evolved into "emerging professional" theater with grant money and stipends and some unsavory disadvantages. (Does anybody remember laughter?) I also took some pro bono freelance writing assignments so I could build a portfolio. Because of that, I got to be an extra in a professional opera production (even though I had to give the Roman sandals back -- but you can't have everything), I got to meet a Broadway producer and I've benefited in other small but significant ways. I had the best date on the most perfect night of my life when I attended the premiere of Cabaret Dada in May of 1995 so I could review the show for a local publication.

I've posted a couple of notices on here offering arts- business- and domestically-related concierge services, and I'm in jobhunt quicksand, so I'm the last one who should be working for free. However, I picked up a project that's giving me some experience in an arena I've been wanting to break into and putting me in the sites of some people who are good to know. Plus, I can honestly say to potential employers that I'm freelancing as I pursue employment. Nobody is retiring off of the revenue from this project yet, but it's picking up steam, and I feel I hitched my star to the right wagon so I'm well-placed when this project breaks out. (John Waters underground, anyone? Blair Witch Project much?)

More power to most of the people who have been able to make a living in their artistic disciplines in Ohio. However, I've always been a proponent of working for exposure and experience. I think it's just a matter of choosing what may be worthwhile to you for whatever reason. I'm not exactly known for not being cynical, but I know an opportunity when I see it. With any job, if someone doesn't want to do it, there are a lot of people who do.

Hey folks I just wanted to comment on this.

I am pretty established as a model actress and singer in the Cleveland area. However, there are times that I have taken a non-paid gig for exposure. In particular, I did a print ad for a country band once with no pay, just a tear sheet. That poster led me to a paid gig in which I will be flown out to LA in Feb 2008 (with hotel accomadations) PLUS pay to shoot a music video.

Now don't get me wrong, I think the majority of the time we all should be paid. I have been fortunate enough to be paid for the majority of work I do... I follow the "4 P's" system. I will consider a job for Promo (exposure), product, print and/or pay. My goal is to get at least 2 or more of teh "4 P's" and usually I do. As an example of product? I am the Spokes Person for Destination Travel 2. I do not get paid much other when I do an appearance or print ad HOWEVER, I get to travel FOR FREE to all over and Destination Travel pays the bill... In the past 6 months I have been to: Atlanta, Miami, San Diego, Tijuana, Sanibel/Captiva Islands, Key West And Naples Florida. If you ask me, not to bad for not getting paid and it is great exposure. Because of my gig with Destination Travel, I landed an on air slot on the radio in Daytona... Interviewed as an upcoming model/actress from Cleveland. All due to exposure. Hmmm... So tell me, would you not take this job just because it is mostly exposure and no direct pay? I also work with Genesis Hair and Skin. I've done 3 print ads for them for no pay. However, I get the use of their salon and all their products, free laser facials, foot detox, oxygenated laser therapy for the skin and let me tell you IT DOES WORK!!!! A yearly package for these services well over $4,000. So again I ask, am I wasting my time because this job doesn't directly pay? I happen to feel I made out on this deal because I recieved free exposure, print work and FREE Service/Product... Not to shabby...

I have one final thought to say here. As I stated before I do not comment much on NeoPal simply for the most part I am disappointed to see the community I am part of being judgemental, critical and constantly putting others down on here. I do not think this was what Neopal was intended for.

And Jean I do implore, if you are going to criticise, then does this mean you have paying job lined up to offer people in our acting/modeling community??? Hmmm....

It comes down to this. We are in the Cleveland market, there are few paying gigs (unfortunately) in this area but taking on non-paid roles helps build your resume to get those future paid gigs whether here or LA/NY or where ever. I've paid my dues of working gigs for free and it's paid off for me in the long run and now I get paid quite often and I am doing well for myself.

Thanks,
Kaye

Dear NeohioPals-
For those of you not familiar The Got Pay? Organization, here is a quick synopsis: On February 17, 2005 WOIO posted a casting call for a commercial they were producing, but offering NO PAY to anyone who would appear in the spot.
After a heated debate on NEOPAL, a panel of 12 area artists, writers, producers and directors formed the GOT PAY? Organization and on March 21, 2005 we held a town hall meeting to discuss the best business standards & practices for all artists, union or non union, in order to establish their worth as commercial actors in the NE Ohio region, in particular. 67 people attended for a lively, 3 hour discussion.
Visit www.gotpay.org/Got_Mentor.html for the panelist bios and much more valuable information.
Here we go again. Same warning, different non-paying opportunity. Here is a MAJOR TV STATION that needs an actress for a Bumper (which is another word for promo or commercial. It identifies the station and it's upcoming programming). Anything that promises nothing more than "great exposure" will only lead to other non-paying opportunities.

Respect yourself, your time and talent.

Remember: If Money Is Made, The Talent Gets Paid!

Your devoted advocate and founder of the Got Pay? Organization.
