Overwhelming response extends Lake Erie College African art exhibit

(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) - Lake Erie College will extend the showing of the
popular exhibit, "A Sense of Place from Africa to Beyond: A Traveler's
Guide to Family, Order, God and Country," through Nov. 30, 2007.

Originally slated to be removed from the College's B.K. Smith Gallery
Oct. 31, the overwhelming response to the exhibit has encouraged Lake
Erie College to keep the show open. The exhibit glimpses the travels of
an American family in Africa chronicled by the art and objects collected
over 30-plus years. Collected on back roads, apart from the tourist
trade, the collection reveals a culture's foundation of social, civic
and spiritual thought and interaction.

Gallery visitors will see a display of artwork inspired by Africa and
African Diaspora including masks, figures, toys and functional and
ceremonial objects. The exhibit also includes juried art pieces from a
call to artists.

The popularity of the exhibit has encouraged the College to investigate
the possibility of exhibiting a similar show next fall on the topic of
Chinese culture.

The B.K. Smith Gallery is located on the east side of Lake Erie College
on Gillett Street near Andrews Osborne Academy. Gallery hours are 9
a.m-9 p.m. This exhibit is free and open to the public. For more
information, call Deb Remington at 440.375.7040.

Founded in 1856, Lake Erie College is a dynamic and progressive
institution of higher education. The College offers 27 undergraduate
majors, as well as master's degrees in business administration and
education. This coeducational college, grounded in the liberal arts,
enrolls just over 1,000 students of all ages and is nationally
recognized for its equine studies programs and international learning
opportunities for students.
