A Howl in the Woods

by Tom Hayes

Wednesday, November 7th

7:30pm

In A Howl in the Woods, Tom Hayes tells the story of three men out in
the woods. Timothy, an obsequious young cowboy, is at a camp with
Spooky, a hypermasculine and domineering cowboy. What they are doing in
the woods isn't really stated, but they pass their time in the campsite
in various ways: including cross-dressing, drinking, reciting obscure
poetic lines and making muffins. During this time, Timothy begins to
question his role and relationship with Spooky. The time that Spooky and
Timothy have together is cut short when a Ranger arrives. The Ranger is
a man of law and rules and is appalled by the behavior of both Timothy
and Spooky and seeks to put an end to it.  An inevitable clash ensues;
but the battle lines aren't nearly as clean as one might expect:
loyalties are as suspect as are the personalities, roles, and genders
the campers inhabit. Conflicts, alliances, and loyalties grow and shift
between all three men; and what's with that howling in the woods? In the
end, Hayes's play draws our attention to questions that are difficult to
answer, such as how do we define ourselves? What do we owe other people?
What do we owe ourselves? Why do people feel compelled to control or
influence others? And why is it difficult to stand up for what we
believe in, and why do others line up against you?

it's easier to talk about cartoons.

Becomes You

Written by Greg Vovos, Directed by Mindy Childress Herman

Featuring Faye Hargate and Molly McGinnis

Two strangers at the breaking point of their lives meet at a park bench.
Mary, a woman near forty, goes to the park in search of privacy at a
time when she is at the absolute breaking point of her life. She
considers taking a bottle of pills but stops when she is interrupted by
Valerie, a teenager who refuses to leave her alone, no matter how much
Mary pleads. What ensues is a territorial battle along the lines of
Albee's Zoo Story that is settled when Veronica pulls out a gun. But
how much can a woman with infertility problems and a teenager
contemplating abortion share? Lives are at stake as a young woman tries
to elicit advice from a woman who refuses to give it.

Let's Talk

by Renee Matthews-Jackson, directed by Eva Withers-Evans

Featuring Conni Blair, Erica Edwards, Lisa Lynn Longstreet, Geraldine
Hardin-Washington and Robin Young

Let's Talk is a one act play that comes straight out of the mouths of
guess who? Women! Five women get together for their monthly po-ke-no
game, which they've done for eight years...The game is always exciting.
They play for hard earned quarters, which never simply involves who
listens well enough to win. These women exchange stories, recipes,
favors, and all kinds of womanly advice. They laugh, cry, gossip,
argue, and yes compliment one another with great adoration.. This
production spreads joy, highlights troubles, and leaves the audience
gossiping about each woman long after they've left for home. The stark
reality of life and living, is evident for all those fortunate enough to
get the opportunity to sit outside the window of this house, and listen
in.

the Last Prisoner of the Vietnam War

After nearly 30 years, the running is over for Howard Mechanic.
Wrongfully convicted of throwing a cherry bomb during a campus antiwar
demonstration on May 4, 1970, he went underground rather than face a
five-year prison sentence. He transformed himself into Phoenix
businessman and civic leader Gary Tredway, a man he might have remained
had he not decided in late 1999 to run for public office. By February
2000, he is once again Howard Mechanic, but he wears a prison uniform
that could be his wardrobe for the foreseeable future. From behind the
bars he had so carefully avoided, he must find a way to remain whole -
and gain a new understanding of what it means to be "free."
