A wonderful film with many treats, a Grammy-Award winner, and lots of
wonderful live music
to see and hear this weekend
AT STOCKER ARTS CENTER

The film is Friday night, November 16, 2007 at 7:30pm

Waitress
2007 (PG-13) 104 min. USA
Director: Adrienne Shelly
Cast: Keri Russell, Jeremy Sisto, Cheryl Hines, Nathan Fillion

Jenna (Keri Russell) is a poor southern woman stuck in a bad marriage to
her jealous jerk of a husband, Earl. Jenna works at Joe's Pie Diner,
where every day she creates amazing pies that she titles after
whatever's going on in her life. Jenna dreams of running away, but she
is trapped inside her miserable life by poverty and her inability to
access her own personal strength. Then she meets Dr. Pomatter, the
handsome new gynecologist in town. Russell delivers a wonderful, complex
performance as Jenna, a repressed woman reaching for happiness, while
Shelly infuses the film with a luminous magical sensibility and an
endearing sense of humor. Confident and clear in vision, WAITRESS makes
delicious upside-down cake of the Cinderella myth.

"It is not so much that Ms. Shelly has banished realism from her story,
but rather that she has tamed and shaped it, finding a perfect,
difficult-to-achieve balance of enchantment and plausibility. The story,
in which resilience is rewarded, and meanness is banished, is comforting
without feeling unduly sentimental, thanks to its mood of easygoing,
tolerant honesty. If WAITRESS were more strenuously uplifting, it might
be labeled a feel-good movie, but it isn't that. It's just a movie that
leaves you feeling good." - A. O. Scott, NEW YORK TIMES

THERE WILL BE A DISCUSSION SESSION AFTER THE FILM.

then there are three opportunities for great live music at Stocker this
weekend!

Saturday, November 17, 2007 - 7:30pm
Solo Pianist GEORGE WINSTON in Concert

George is best known for his seasonal solo piano recordings -- Autumn,
Winter Into Spring, December, and Summer, which are in his melodic folk
piano style, as well as his themed albums Forest, Plains, and Montana -
A Love Story, and his albums dedicated to composers, Linus & Lucy - The
Music of Vince Guaraldi, and Night Divides the Day - The Music of the
Doors. His latest album Gulf Coast Blues & Impressions - A Hurricane
Relief Benefit has raised over $50,000 for hurricane related relief in
the Gulf Coast.

He also plays New Orleans R&B piano, stride piano, and some of the
compositions of the late jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi (best known for his
soundtracks for the first 16 of the Peanuts animations).

The RealMusic Guide describes George Winston's music this way: "His
lilting, lyrical piano style conjures seasonal images in impressionist,
musical paintings.

Please join us in support of Second Harvest Food Bank by bringing a
donation of canned food to the concert. There will be collection baskets
