Heights Arts presents a very folky Holiday Hootenanny, featuring Noah Budin, David Budin and Julia Mell, singing some of the prettiest and nicest Christmas and Hanukkah songs ever written.

It takes place Saturday, December 1, at 7 p.m., at the Heights Arts Studio in the Cleveland Heights Main Library (2340 Lee Road, in the former YMCA building, across the street from the original library, attached by the bridge over Lee Road; there is free parking in back of and across the street to the north of the Studio).

Julia Mell and David Budin, of the folk group Long Road, will take the lead on the Christmas songs, which they have drawn from the old English, Appalachian and gospel traditions. And these songs will not include any that you will be hearing in the shopping malls and on the radio constantly for the next month. They are real songs (no Santa Clause, no snowmen, no reindeer). There will be many songs you have not heard before, and some that if you have, you probably have never heard them done in way they do them.

Noah Budin, one of the area’s best known singer-songwriters, will be taking the lead on the Hanukkah songs, including Peter, Paul & Mary’s “Light One Candle,” Noah’s own song “Let It Burn,” and others.

The cost is $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 and under. Heights Arts suggests making reservations by calling 216-371-3457 or e-mailing register at heightsarts.org.
