95 Year-Old How To Book Gets Center Stage
Hudson, OH It may not be a campaign to bring Vaudeville back to life, but Hudson, resident, Brian Diehl, is doing his best to revive Frederic La Delles book, How to Enter Vaudeville. Diehl has just launched a promotional web site: www.howtoentervaudeville.com and is sharing this piece of history with theater lovers. The book retails for $16.00 and is also available through www.Amazon.com.
How to Enter Vaudeville offers interesting reading for those who enjoy being on either side of the footlights, Diehl says, Ive been acting for more than thirty years and I still learned a lot from it things like chapeauography, knockabout acts and burlesque acts. The book also provides a sample theatrical contract and gives advice on makeup, costuming and dealing with theater owners. Its a great piece of performing arts history.
Written in 1913 by Frederic La Delle (a pseudonym for a man believed to be Frederic Kirkpatrick of Jackson, Michigan), the book describes ninety types of vaudeville acts, offers publicity, rehearsal, etiquette, slang and other tips to anyone considering a life in greasepaint. More than 250 illustrations grace the pages; probably one of the reasons the Library of Congress chose it to display in a Bob Hope retrospective.
Vaudeville was the predecessor to motion pictures for mass entertainment. Shows consisted of any number of acts; from jugglers, to singers, to comedians. Sometimes shows were too coarse for general consumption, but, overall, vaudeville offered variety shows for mass consumption. Bob Hope, George Burns, the Marx Brothers and many other Hollywood stars got their start on vaudeville stages across the U.S. and Canada.
Brian Diehl is the founder of Thinknik (www.thinknik.com), a creative marketing and design firm, in Chagrin Falls and Hudson, Ohio. Thinknik provided the high resolution scans and Photoshop work that made this book possible. Diehl, a Kent State graduate, has performed in more than 30 stage productions, some recent roles including; Jerry in Chagrin Valley Little Theatres The Full Monty, Dwayne in Broadview Heights Spotlight Theatres Messiah on the Frigidaire, and Kanute in Actors Summits Dont Hug Me.
