Advanced Stage Combat WorkshopMay18th  10am to 6pmat the Historic Centrum Theater in CoventryThe Italian Swordplay of Romeo and Juliet "The Immortal Passado, The Punto Reverso, The Hay!" What many do not realize is this a joke at the expense of Italian swordmasters of the Elizabethan era. Romeo and Juliet is peppered with classical references to not only sword moves but sword masters as well. One such master was Rocco Bennetti, who was known in the period as "the butcher of silk buttons". Bennetti was a swordmaster at the Blackfriars training school and was despised by an English Swordmaster George Silver who challenged him to four duels over his lifetime. Silver's treatise, "the Paradoxes of Defence" was an attack on any fighting style other than English. Shakespeare being true to his English Heritage, wrote R&J using many of Silver's beliefs as a stance, which is evident in many in many of Mercutios lines throughout.
