Usually, the story of two empty-nesters struggling to find themselves and
each other, touched unexpectedly by an outside influence, wouldn’t make for
much of a play. Unless, of course, A.R. Gurney puts pen to paper and the
play is Sylvia. Kate is an inner city English teacher with a growing career
and Greg is a burned out stockbroker. Suddenly, they find their long
marriage intruded upon by Sylvia, who wants very badly to be the new woman
in Greg’s life. Sylvia is no buxom blond, though. This home wrecker is a
cross between a labradore and a poodle, and Kate finds her life turned
upside down by a shaggy dog which happens to be her husband’s new soul-mate.

This drama is the story of a novice nun who gives birth and insists that the
dead child was the result of a virgin conception. Agnes of God tells the
story of a young, simple-minded nun whose newborn child is found dead in a
wastebasket in her room. Sister Agnes claims to have no memory of the
conception or the birth so a psychiatrist is appointed by the court to
determine whether Sister Agnes is fit to stand trial for the murder of the
baby. The mystery of it all is that the nuns lead a sequestered life and so
it seems there are no men who could possibly have been the father. The drama
delves into the past of Sister Agnes and the resulting revelations for the
psychiatrist and the Mother Superior will enthrall the audience.

Cabaret presented by Stage Left Theatre Company

Grace Drake Center for the Arts, 222 S. Broadway St., Medina 44256
330.764.1999

Seating is limited; reservations are recommended! Presented by Stage Left
Theatre Company in collaboration with Medina County Arts Foundation.
Director–Jennifer Dove Musical Director– J.T. Buck Choreographer- Megan
Pitcher. Lighting Designer- Mike Sferro. For more information or directions,
www.stagelefttheatrecompany.org <http://www.stagelefttheatrecompany.org/> .

“Cabaret, Kander and Ebb's provocative masterpiece, is a sublimely dark look
at the tawdry decadence of Weimar Germany's Berlin. The story is of a young
American writer who comes to Berlin just before the rise of Hitler and the
Nazi Party. As he struggles to write, the young man finds himself drawn to
the seedy netherworld of the legendary Kit Kat Klub, and to the club's star
attraction, Sally Bowles. From the authentic 1930's Berlin club seating to
its haunting, unforgettable music, Cabaret is divinely decadent
entertainment at its best!”

7th annual Open Frame Student Film Festival

Malone College’s Johnson Center for Worship and the Fine Arts (chapel), 2600
Cleveland Ave. N.W. Canton 44709

The program is free and open to the public. Eight short films (total run
time will not exceed two hours) written, directed, produced, edited, scored,
and acted by students will be screened and receive awards from a jury of
media professionals. Jurors include Kim Ann Pfau, shorts selection
committee, Cleveland International Film Fest and the Canton Art Film Club;
Dan Kane, entertainment editor, Canton Repository; Robb Hankins, Arts in
Stark; Connie Collins, local filmmaker; and Seth Thomas, a 2005 Malone
graduate and LAFSC alumnus currently working in Hollywood. They will be
joined by a faculty member of the Los Angeles Film Studies Program (LAFSC).
While these student films are primarily learning opportunities for students
who desire to grow as story-tellers and creative vision-casters, Malone
College proudly is opening up the festival for the first time for public
viewing. Each of this year's films tells engaging stories or makes a unique
point. Admission is free, and donations are accepted.

The purpose of the Open Frame Festival is to allow students to work together
developing their vision, craft, and voice. The film festival is an event
co-sponsored by the Communication Arts Department, Media Services, and the
Student Activities Committee. All of the films in the Open Frame are short
films, varying in length from 2 to 17 minutes. Each film was written,
directed, and produced by Malone students. A brief awards ceremony will take
place following the film screening.

The Open Frame Film Festival supplements Communication Arts Department
curriculum by giving students an opportunity to enact skills taught in a
broad range of courses and to develop qualities essential to personal and
professional success.

Akron Art Museum, One High Street, downtown Akron OH

Tickets are $5 for members and students and $10 for nonmembers. To purchase
tickets, visit www.AkronArtMuseum.org <http://www.akronartmuseum.org/> .

Shore will use his own works to illustrate and explore the nature of

Photography Collection, currently on view through May 25 at the Akron Art
Museum. He is also the author of The Nature of Photographs, which is

Andy Warhol’s studio in the late 1960s and in 1971 became the second living
photographer to have a solo show at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The artist began a series of road trip and travels in 1972, drawing
inspiration from a range of isolated locations and daily experiences. He
was one of the first photographers to work exclusively in color photography.
His images of the American landscape and transformations of everyday moments
into scenes of thoughtful contemplation have influenced a generation of

Nature of Photographs and Contemporary Artist --- Stephen Shore, are
available for purchase in the Museum Store. This lecture is presented with

coordinate a 12-week celebration of the culture of Japan and assist with
public relations. Therefore, we are looking for Japanese performers, such as
Taiiko, Koto, Nichibu, Shakuhachi, Shamisen, Nou, Bonsai, Ikebana, Japanese
Tea Ceremony, and so forth. The performer doesn’t necessarily have to be
Japanese, just aware of the Japanese rituals and traditions. If you could
let us know of any artists, performers or entertainers that would support
our activities, we would greatly appreciate it. Please contact Laurie G.

Call for Singers and Instrumentalists: First Grace UCC, Akron (re-posted
03/08)

First Grace United Church of Christ, an Open and Affirming congregation of
the United Church of Christ, seeks a very special crew of singers and
instrumentalists. Our denomination's slogan is 'God is Still Speaking'. We
take that also to mean that God is still singing, jamming, and rocking.
We offer worship and music in a unique way, and require 'just the right'
leadership to make it happen. Are You: - called to serve the spiritual and
creative needs of others? - An advanced high school or college music
student? - a professional musician with a spiritual side? - Have a mature,
disciplined work ethic both in and out of the rehearsal room? - An open and
inclusive worldview?
- a proactive problem solver? - Have the capacity to improvise, think on
your feet and 'go with the flow'? - willing to sing and/or play a diversity
of styles? (We believe God likes everything from Bach to Bob Dylan, from
Gregorian Chant to Blind Boys from Alabama and more). If so, drop me a line
and let's talk. We have openings right away and down the line. To put it
honestly and bluntly: Our church loves and is open to just about everyone.
But! Those who have a habit of whining, complaining, are musically rigid,
gossipy, needy of attention, or who require years of prep time and hand
holding, or who could otherwise be considered 'high-maintenance' tend to not
be very successful here. Of course Jesus loves those folks, but he wouldn't
hire them for professional arts ministry at First Grace. This gig isn't for
every musician. But it may be for you! We have paid openings for, or can
make room for keyboard, brass, winds, percussion, Sopranos, Altos, Tenors
and Basses, world instruments...surprise us! We also occasionally employ
actors, dancers, visual artists, poets or any one else who can creatively
lead our worship and arts life. Looking forward to your response!

“In the Garden”

Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Way East, downtown Massillon 44646
330.833.4061

Photographs by Ohio artists: David Bergholz (Cleveland), Paula Willmot Kraus
(Dayton), Judith McMillan (Cleveland), Tony Mendoza (Columbus), Ben Montague
(Dayton), Ardine Nelson (Columbus), P.J. Rogers (Akron), Andy Snow (Dayton),
David Stichweh (Columbus), Sean Wilkinson (Dayton), and Tennyson Williams
(Columbus).
“Gardens appeal to a wide variety of audiences, and gardens tend to evoke
memories for all those who enjoy them. Each person who wanders through a
garden will take away a different feeling or perception than someone else.
In the same way, each artist who focuses on the garden as a theme will
approach it in a new way,” says Massillon Museum Executive Director
Christine Fowler Shearer, who curated the exhibition with the assistance of
Ken Emerick, Director of Individual Creativity for the Ohio Arts Council,
and co-curators James Bowling, Artist and Assistant Professor, Otterbein
College, and Jane Black, Executive Director, Dayton Visual Arts Center. The
exhibition will travel to other Ohio institutions after its eleven-week run
in Massillon.
The artists have chosen different experiences to share about the concept of
gardens. Some images focus on specific flowers or an actual location, such
as Beijing or the German Schrebergartens, while other images look at the
nests and insects that may be found in gardens universally.
A full-color, 28-page “In the Garden” catalog, including photographs by each
artist, will be offered for sale throughout the exhibition in the Museum
shop. The Massillon Museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday

Exhibition: Laurie Addis: Contemporary Weavings Inspired the Museum's
Kashmiri Shawl

Massillon Museum 2nd floor, 121 Lincoln Way East, downtown Massillon 44646

Painter and weaver Laurie Addis first saw the Massillon Museum’s finest
paisley Kashmir shawl when it was loaned to the Kent State University Museum
for a fashion exhibition. Using digital technologies, the artist controls
and disrupts thread patterns in an innovative way to create painterly
reinterpretations of the historic weaving process used to make the Museum’s
shawl.
Born in Lurgan, Northern Ireland, Laurie Addis now lives and works in Kent,
Ohio, where she is an Adjunct Assistant Professor, School of Art, Kent State
University. Her work was exhibited in 2007 in Paisley: Exploding the
Teardrop in the PM Gallery and House, London, England, and in Side by Side
at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland. It has been seen in group and
solo shows in Kent, Oberlin, and Sandusky, Ohio; in Helsinki, Finland; and
in many venues in England. The Massillon Museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to
5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. A

will give visitors a first look at the community-wide exhibition. The map
lists and locates the additional sculpture sites. Each sculpture will be
accompanied by a plaque with a brief description and a phone number to call
for a free cell phone audio tour. Compliments of Massillon Cable TV,
visitors will be able to select each work of art individually on their

phone tour number and learn about the entire exhibition,” said Mandy
Altimus, the Museum staff member responsible for the audio segment of the
project. Pick up map at Massillon Museum - Free/No Reservations.

Exhibition: Creativity Transcends

Akron Art Museum, One High Street, Akron OH 44308 330.376.9185

This specially organized exhibition represents an important next step in a
growing relationship between the Akron Art Museum and United Disability
Services. Over the years, artists and writers with disabilities have
submitted their work with the hope of being published in United Disability
Services’ Kaleidoscope, a magazine whose mission is to explore the
experience of disability through literature and the fine arts. Now, nine of
these visual artists from across the country whose art attained that honor
are being further celebrated in this exhibition at the Akron Art Museum.
They are Jerry Bontrager, Albuquerque, NM; John Bramblitt, Denton, TX; Julie
Cohn, Berkeley, CA; Garry Curry, Vancouver Island, British Columbia;
Alistair Green, Vancouver Island, British Columbia; Robert Harris,
Cincinnati, OH; d’Elaine Johnson, Edmonds, WA; Elizabeth “Grandma” Layton
(deceased), Lawrence, KS; and Linda Sibio, Joshua Tree, CA.

The show includes works of painting, drawing and sculpture. The exhibition’s
title conveys the concept that it is both inaccurate and limiting to define
a person solely by their disability.

When the first issue of Kaleidoscope was published in 1979, the idea was to
provide a creative option in the vocational services program of the agency
now known as United Disability Services. There was no grand vision for the
future – just an opportunity for the people in the program to give shape and
form to ideas, experiences and feelings.

Today the magazine is published twice a year and has evolved into an
award-winning publication that is part of the collections of approximately
75 public and university libraries across the country, has subscribers on
several continents and is recognized nationally and internationally for the
quality of its articles, essays, fiction, poetry and art.

For those whose work is displayed, this is a thrilling, confirming moment.
For visitors with disabilities, this can be a transforming experience of
possibility for themselves. For the community in general, the message is
that a disability should not define a person, that it is only one piece of
who a person is and that in fact, creativity can and often does transcend!

Creativity Transcends is organized by the Akron Art Museum and United
Disability Services. It is made possible by generous gifts from Akron
Community Foundation, the Henry V. and Frances W. Christianson Charitable
Foundation and the Parent Coalition For Persons With Disabilities.

Saturday Family Drop-In Days are made possible by County of Summit Regional
Arts & Cultural District Board. www.AkronArtMuseum.org
