Sun Apr 20 12:59:26 PDT 2008

Hello! This edition of the Square Peg Promotions arts calendar includes
color-coded entries for music concerts, theatre, dance, written and spoken
word gatherings, and visual arts events happening in Stark County and
several surrounding areas this week. Community events that defy
categorization are included in bold, black font. (For the FREE, full version
of this calendar with arts events through 2009, just email us at
<mailto:janelle at squarepegpromotions.com> janelle at squarepegpromotions.com
with “subscribe” in the subject line!)

Saturday brings us a delightful smorgasbord of local arts events, including
(but by no means limited to
):, the new monthly party/exhibit for the
Massillon community presented by Ananda Center and others, Art Displaced
will feature the artworks of Scot Phillips and live music by local
musicians, Acid Pros ( <http://www.theanandacenter.org/>
www.theanandacenter.org); Art In One, the annual art show and concert at
First Christian Church in North Canton, featuring visual & performing arts &
music by all ages (editor’s note
at last week’s rehearsal, I experienced an
honest-to-goodness drum/percussion circle comprised of 1- and 2-year
olds
and they were GOOD!); the annual Hall of Fame Chorus concert (Plain
Twp.); an ASL-interpreted performance of “Enchanted” at Weathervane (if any
theatre in Stark is offering this service to this ever-increasing segment of
people in our community, please let me know about it!); and a new,
improvisational comedy performance by Scared Scriptless (downtown Canton)—a
wonderful way to turn $8 into an evening of side-splitting laughter while
supporting local performance art.

Of course, Saturday seems a long way from now. Fortunately, we have dozens
of live music & arts events to keep you occupied, cultured, sociable,
educated and/or entertained!

Enjoy!--Janelle

story of a young, simple-minded nun whose newborn child is found dead in a
wastebasket in her room. Sister Agnes claims to have no memory of the
conception or the birth so a psychiatrist is appointed by the court to
determine whether Sister Agnes is fit to stand trial for the murder of the
baby. The mystery of it all is that the nuns lead a sequestered life and so
it seems there are no men who could possibly have been the father. The drama
delves into the past of Sister Agnes and the resulting revelations for the
psychiatrist and the Mother Superior will enthrall the audience.

“Cabaret, Kander and Ebb's provocative masterpiece, is a sublimely dark look
at the tawdry decadence of Weimar Germany's Berlin. The story is of a young
American writer who comes to Berlin just before the rise of Hitler and the
Nazi Party. As he struggles to write, the young man finds himself drawn to
the seedy netherworld of the legendary Kit Kat Klub, and to the club's star
attraction, Sally Bowles. From the authentic 1930's Berlin club seating to
its haunting, unforgettable music, Cabaret is divinely decadent
entertainment at its best!”

of our planet's relationship to water. Filmed in 14 countries, One Water
explores the global fresh water crisis and how this invaluable resource
touches on every aspect of human life and culture.

This spectacular film shows the state of the world’s fresh water and its
affect on people, which is becoming more aggravated by population growth and
climate change and compromises the future of all life on the planet. It also
raises the essential question about clean, safe water being a basic human
right. One Water includes candid interviews with many international

This drama is the story of a novice nun who gives birth and insists that the
dead child was the result of a virgin conception. Agnes of God tells the
story of a young, simple-minded nun whose newborn child is found dead in a
wastebasket in her room.

The Big Read: Western Stark County Reads The Call of the Wild
Dog Hike starting at and organized by Massillon Recreation Center, 505 Erie
Street North Free/No Reservations. www.massillonlibrary.org
<http://www.massillonlibrary.org/> www.massillonmuseum.org
<http://www.massillonmuseum.org/>

On Saturday, April 26, the Massillon Museum, with the collaboration of the
Massillon Parks and Recreation Department, will host The Call of the Wild
Dog Hike beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Massillon Recreation Center. Dog
owners and their friendly pets are invited to trek north...just like Jack
London. The group hike will follow the Ohio and Erie Canalway Trail on top
of the levee to the Lake Avenue Trailhead, where dogs will receive a little
bag of “gold” treats in keeping with the Alaska Gold Rush theme.

The event is free and open to all genial pooches. Dogs must wear a leash and
owners must bring clean-up supplies. No reservations are required. Park and
meet in the north end of the Recreation Center lot, 505 Erie Street North in
Massillon.

Christa Lancaster, outreach program supervisor for Massillon Parks and
Recreation Department, is chairing the Dog Hike in cooperation with the
Massillon Museum. She says it will be part of “The Day of Walking” and a
great way to start getting in shape for the summer. The MS Walk will also be
starting and ending at the Recreation Center; those walkers will be using
the Sippo Valley Trail. For more information, she can be reached at
330-832-1621.

The Dog Hike is part of The Big Read: Western Stark County Reads The Call
of the Wild, a National Endowment for the Arts project spearheaded locally
by the Massillon Museum with the collaboration of Massillon Public Library.
It is a month-long celebration of The Call of the Wild by Jack London.
Organizers selected the book because the author's mother, Flora Wellman,
grew up in Massillon. The community is encouraged to read and discuss the
book throughout the month of April.

For more information about The Big Read, call 330-833-4061 or visit

“Art Displaced: Neighborhood Natives” (monthly feature)

Live Musical Performance by local group: The Acid Pros

Free Refreshments provided by local caterer The HogFather BBQ.

Ye Olde Peddler Shoppe, 44 & 48 Charles Avenue, Massillon OH 44646

A new collaboration joins the Ananda Center with the Downtown Massillon
Association and Massillon Main Street to highlight local artists right here
in Massillon. Art Displaced will feature the work of one local artist the
last Saturday of every month beginning Saturday, March 29th.

Featured artist’s work will be displayed and available for sale during the
event. Food will be provided by local vendors while local performers
entertain the crowd. All Art Displaced events are free to the public,
providing a unique opportunity to celebrate the arts in Massillon.

Note from organizer and local artist, Bili Kribbs: “We are still seeking
empty space to use for future events. If you or somebody you know owns and
empty space in the Downtown Massillon area, please contact (Bili). We are
also seeking food vendor sponsors that are local to Massillon as well as
visual artists ready to display, share and sell their work. If that's you,
or somebody you know, please contact (Bili).” bili at bili.org;
http://www.bili.org <http://www.bili.org/> ; http://www.myspace.com/thebili
Scot Phillips is one of the most inspired and motivated artists to graduate
from Washington
High school here in Massillon. His studies of Art History and fine arts at
Kent State University have led him to incredibly obsessive expressions of
relationships between people, work, and
machines. His work is comprised of new ideas on very old materials, often
employing found objects and other thrown-away items. Paintings, canvas
constructions, silk screen prints and ready-mades make up a fascinating body
of work called the Blak Horse Gallery. Phillips' compulsive use of symbols
on everything from wood planks to t-shirts and buttons make for both
fashionable and conceptual artwork.

The Acid Pros are Massillon natives Nick Gore and Matt Berens. They have
been creating original music together for 12 years using digital technology
combined with hand percussion, guitar, keyboard, samples and vocals. The
Acid Pros have produced 4 full length cd's, including a double album.
Currently Nick and Matt are pursuing solo projects. They are reuniting for
the Art Displaced: Neighborhood Natives April 26th event.

and TDD patrons may use the Ohio Relay System to place a ticket order by

The setting is 1922 in London. We meet two English houswives. Bored by their
humdrum lives and desperate to flee a cold and damp, mid-winter London, the
two hatch a plan to rent a villa in Italy for the month of April. The women
place a newspaper advertisement seeking two other women to split the cost.
The notice attracts the attention of two women very much removed from their
usual social realms. Once at the Italian coast, the restorative spell of
wisteria and sunshine work their magic as the women welcome the exciting
opportunity to relax and rediscover laughter, basking in the promise of
spring.

"This play is lovely and sunny, tender and peaceful, kind and magical. It is
like a ray of sun on your face during springtime when you want to close your
eyes and smile and stop this moment of serene happiness and cherish it
forever." –Bob Belfance, Director

Mikal Davis Memorial Benefit Concert

Vicki's, Triplett Blvd (by the Akron Rubber Bowl), Akron

>From George at George’s Drum Shop: “On March 6th, 2008, 26-year-old Mikal
Davis passed away from injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was on his
way home from Michigan. Mikal was 26 years old, was employed by Guitar
Center in Fairlawn, and was also an accomplished musician and vocalist. He
was a positive influence on the lives of the people he met, especially young
people. Mikal was a praise and worship leader in his church, as well as
played and sang in various local bands. We are asking for donations of
anything that we could raffle to help raise money for this family. We are
also looking for food that could be donated for the benefit. We would like
to be able to feed the people who are going to come and spend their day with
us to bring some comfort and support to this family. I'm sure that you would
agree that at 26 years old, we don't expect to suddenly incur the expenses
of a funeral. This was a very unexpected expense for Mikal’s family, not to
mention the tremendous amount of grief they are experiencing.

Donations may be sent to 916 Renninger Rd., Akron, OH 44319. For concert and
other details call (330) 690-3838.” Thanks, George, for spreading the word.

Exhibition: Laurie Addis: Contemporary Weavings Inspired the Museum's
Kashmiri Shawl

Massillon Museum 2nd floor, 121 Lincoln Way East, downtown Massillon 44646

Painter and weaver Laurie Addis first saw the Massillon Museum’s finest
paisley Kashmir shawl when it was loaned to the Kent State University Museum
for a fashion exhibition. Using digital technologies, the artist controls
and disrupts thread patterns in an innovative way to create painterly
reinterpretations of the historic weaving process used to make the Museum’s
shawl.
Born in Lurgan, Northern Ireland, Laurie Addis now lives and works in Kent,
Ohio, where she is an Adjunct Assistant Professor, School of Art, Kent State
University. Her work was exhibited in 2007 in Paisley: Exploding the
Teardrop in the PM Gallery and House, London, England, and in Side by Side
at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland. It has been seen in group and
solo shows in Kent, Oberlin, and Sandusky, Ohio; in Helsinki, Finland; and
in many venues in England. The Massillon Museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to

Exhibition: Creativity Transcends

Akron Art Museum, One High Street, Akron OH 44308 330.376.9185

This specially organized exhibition represents an important next step in a
growing relationship between the Akron Art Museum and United Disability
Services. Over the years, artists and writers with disabilities have
submitted their work with the hope of being published in United Disability
Services’ Kaleidoscope, a magazine whose mission is to explore the
experience of disability through literature and the fine arts. Now, nine of
these visual artists from across the country whose art attained that honor
are being further celebrated in this exhibition at the Akron Art Museum.
They are Jerry Bontrager, Albuquerque, NM; John Bramblitt, Denton, TX; Julie
Cohn, Berkeley, CA; Garry Curry, Vancouver Island, British Columbia;
Alistair Green, Vancouver Island, British Columbia; Robert Harris,
Cincinnati, OH; d’Elaine Johnson, Edmonds, WA; Elizabeth “Grandma” Layton
(deceased), Lawrence, KS; and Linda Sibio, Joshua Tree, CA.

The show includes works of painting, drawing and sculpture. The exhibition’s
title conveys the concept that it is both inaccurate and limiting to define
a person solely by their disability.

When the first issue of Kaleidoscope was published in 1979, the idea was to
provide a creative option in the vocational services program of the agency
now known as United Disability Services. There was no grand vision for the
future – just an opportunity for the people in the program to give shape and
form to ideas, experiences and feelings.

Today the magazine is published twice a year and has evolved into an
award-winning publication that is part of the collections of approximately
75 public and university libraries across the country, has subscribers on
several continents and is recognized nationally and internationally for the
quality of its articles, essays, fiction, poetry and art.

For those whose work is displayed, this is a thrilling, confirming moment.
For visitors with disabilities, this can be a transforming experience of
possibility for themselves. For the community in general, the message is
that a disability should not define a person, that it is only one piece of
who a person is and that in fact, creativity can and often does transcend!

Creativity Transcends is organized by the Akron Art Museum and United
Disability Services. It is made possible by generous gifts from Akron
Community Foundation, the Henry V. and Frances W. Christianson Charitable
Foundation and the Parent Coalition For Persons With Disabilities.

Saturday Family Drop-In Days are made possible by County of Summit Regional
Arts & Cultural District Board. www.AkronArtMuseum.org
