Hello! This edition of the Square Peg Promotions arts calendar includes color-coded entries for music concerts, theatre, dance, written and spoken word gatherings, and visual arts events happening this week in Stark County and several surrounding areas. Community events that defy categorization are included in bold, black font.

The Stark County area has several new theatre productions this weekend and a load of great live music concerts on Saturday (5/3). The spring session of art classes at Rabbit on the Moon (Massillon) starts this Saturday (5/3), too, for anyone ages 3 to 103. Details are in the calendar below.

Anita Artzner, founder of Building Balanced Bodies with Anita (Canton & North Canton), is offering one free Pilates class to any new participant from May 1st to 31st to help us jump into spring. And while we’re talking about Anita, we congratulate her on making her acting & singing debut in Man of La Mancha (Canal Fulton Players). Check Anita & her cohorts out this weekend or next (May 2-4, 9-11)!

Tickets are on sale now for Living Fountain Dance Company’s “Concert About Love” (May 9th, North Canton); for Canton Cabaret Musical Dinner Theatre’s nostalgic original production, A Tribute to the USO (May 16,18,30, & June 1st); and for The Art of Worship arts conference (July 11 & 12), which also features a live concert ($8 tickets) by young, up-n-coming bluegrass/folk duo, Alathea.

See you in a few days at Canton’s First Friday!

Hey Indians fans!! This one’s for you! Joe Boyd is addicted to baseball and particularly the Cleveland Indians. He is willing to do whatever it takes to bring his team to victory and win the American League Pennant against the team we all love to hate – those Damn Yankees! To become an all-star player, he is willing to sell his soul. Although there is an escape clause, the devil “Mr. Applegate” is determined to keep Joe from returning to his normal life. The humorous and laugh-out-loud antics of the devil will have you in baseball stitches! His efforts are highlighted by the seductress Lola. “Whatever Lola Wants (Lola Gets),” “Those Were the Good Old Days,” and “Shoeless Joe” are entertaining additions to the score and will have you rooting for more! INDIANS ARE VICTORIOUS…INDIANS WIN THE 2008 PENNANT! Contact the Carousel Box Office or visit www.carouseldinnertheatre.com <http://www.carouseldinnertheatre.com/> for more information.

White original are captured in this adaptation by Joseph Robinette. The many adventures of Stuart Little are brought vividly to life in this story-theatre presentation. The acting ensemble plays many human and animal roles in a series of delightful scenes that make the marvelous maneuverings of a mild-mannered mouse trying to survive in a "real-people's world".

For more information on Page to stage coming to your Event or School contact Carrie at discoverytheatre at earthlink.net or call (330) 456 -6082. The Page to Stage Outreach Program was created to increase awareness of the arts and theatrical opportunities in Stark County by providing teachers and community members an alternative source of fine arts education. The program, under the direction of Players Guild staff, produces a live theatrical production for touring purposes throughout local schools and the community. The traveling troupe performs a new show each year for schools lacking funding for outside theatrical activities or the time and resources to develop their own programming. The content of the Page to Stage touring production was developed using K-12 fine arts curriculum standards and incorporates literature, published plays and original works. Additional instruction includes other areas such as improvisation, costuming, make up, and building a character. The goal is to provide affordable theatrical experiences for schools by enhancing their fine arts programming. We strive to enrich the cultural lives of our community by providing nurturing and educational theatrical experiences which inspire, empower and awaken the artistic imagination of our youth.

We usually don't sell anything but drums but for this event we welcome guitar and bass gear, P.A. gear, keyboards, DJ gear, . . .whatever. Why? It's spring, we have a 48 foot tractor trailer full of used drums and parts, you have some used drum gear to sell, or you want to buy some used drums at garage sale prices, or your guitar player wants to buy or sell used guitar gear, or you just got your tax refund and are itching to spend it, or you just want have a good time strolling around looking at all the music stuff, or you want to hear the players jamming, or you want to jam a little bit, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. . .

Who's playing? Anybody that wants to! We'll have a three piece house blues and jazz band set up in the parking lot and anyone can sit in and jam. Bring your rock band and play a couple of songs! The more the merrier!

How? If you want to sell just email us george at georgesdrumshop.com or go to the website for details. Bring your stuff down, bring your own folding table, folding chairs, tents, or open up your trunk or van. Electricity can be supplied to a few of the sellers.

How much? For buyers, it's free! No admission! Sellers can pay a flat fee for a booth or give us ten percent of what you sell. We'll run credit cards for you or take Paypal payments, but remember "Cash is king"!

What if my stuff doesn't sell? If it is something we can sell and is in decent shape, we'll either buy it or you can leave it with us to sell on consignment in our store or on Ebay.

What about new gear? Well, the drum shop will have special prices that day on new gear, lots of items at half price, and some close out items at even less. We welcome other dealers.

I'm Hungry! We'll have soft drinks and munchies for sale!

Seeking Christian musicians for a worship band at Church of the Saviour in Wooster. Average attendance is over 500 per week. Mostly looking for percussion, guitars, sax, and bass. Contact Gary Wayne wayne.gary88 at yahoo.com (posted 2.29.08)

Call for Singers and Instrumentalists: First Grace UCC, Akron (re-posted 03/08)

First Grace United Church of Christ, an Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ, seeks a very special crew of singers and instrumentalists. Our denomination's slogan is 'God is Still Speaking'. We take that also to mean that God is still singing, jamming, and rocking.
We offer worship and music in a unique way, and require 'just the right' leadership to make it happen. Are You: - called to serve the spiritual and creative needs of others? - An advanced high school or college music student? - a professional musician with a spiritual side? - Have a mature, disciplined work ethic both in and out of the rehearsal room? - An open and inclusive worldview?
- a proactive problem solver? - Have the capacity to improvise, think on your feet and 'go with the flow'? - willing to sing and/or play a diversity of styles? (We believe God likes everything from Bach to Bob Dylan, from Gregorian Chant to Blind Boys from Alabama and more). If so, drop me a line and let's talk. We have openings right away and down the line. To put it honestly and bluntly: Our church loves and is open to just about everyone. But! Those who have a habit of whining, complaining, are musically rigid, gossipy, needy of attention, or who require years of prep time and hand holding, or who could otherwise be considered 'high-maintenance' tend to not be very successful here. Of course Jesus loves those folks, but he wouldn't hire them for professional arts ministry at First Grace. This gig isn't for every musician. But it may be for you! We have paid openings for, or can make room for keyboard, brass, winds, percussion, Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses, world instruments...surprise us! We also occasionally employ actors, dancers, visual artists, poets or any one else who can creatively lead our worship and arts life. Looking forward to your response!

Painter and weaver Laurie Addis first saw the Massillon Museum’s finest paisley Kashmir shawl when it was loaned to the Kent State University Museum for a fashion exhibition. Born in Lurgan, Northern Ireland, Laurie Addis now lives and works in Kent, Ohio, where she is an Adjunct Assistant Professor, School of Art, Kent State University. Her work was exhibited in 2007 in Paisley: Exploding the Teardrop in the PM Gallery and House, London, England, and in Side by Side at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland. It has been seen in group and solo shows in Kent, Oberlin, and Sandusky, Ohio; in Helsinki, Finland; and in many venues in England. Exhibition continues through May 25th. www.massillonmuseum.org <http://www.massillonmuseum.org/>
Eleven students who enrolled in Professor Lee Horrisberger’s digital photography class at Walsh University are studying the work of outstanding photojournalists from the perspectives of artistic style, technique, and history. The course culminates in an exhibition in the Massillon Museum’s Studio M from April 20 through May 25, 2008.

The third annual “Image to Image: A Comparative Study of Past and Present Photojournalists’ Images, Styles, and Shooting Techniques” will feature the work of Aleksandar Bashkov, Andrew Board, Chelsea Crofford, Ryan Lake, Amanda Leary, Matthew Marshall, Kristina Muoio, Jennifer Paumier, Jennifer Poinar, Christopher Tucker, and Ebony Gibson-Williams.

Among the photographers they have chosen to emulate are Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lewis Hine, David Hume Kennerly, Dorothea Lange, Neil Leifer, James Nachtwey, Jacob Riis, W. Eugene Smith, and Margaret Bourke-White.

The students will imitate the photography style, lighting, and content of the photojournalist of their choosing to demonstrate the impact of style and technique on artistic content. Each student’s work will be printed, matted, and hung beside a reproduction of a photograph by his selected photojournalist, a bibliography, and the student’s photographic notes. The students and their professor will help Massillon Museum Curator Alexandra Nicholis install the exhibition.

Brewster Dairy, Massillon Save-A-Lot, Starbucks at Washington Square (North Canton), and Shearer’s Food Inc. will sponsor the exhibition opening.

The Studio M show may be seen during regular Museum hours, Tuesday through Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., except when the Silk Room has been reserved for private functions. A call to the Museum office can confirm that the exhibit is available for viewing—330-833-4061.

Studio M enhances the collaboration between the Museum and the community by showcasing the artistic talents of local, regional, and national artists. The series of five-week shows will continue throughout the year, selected by jurors from proposals submitted by artists. Brochures containing guidelines and an application are available by contacting the Massillon Museum at 330-833-4061 or www.massillonmuseum.org <http://www.massillonmuseum.org/> .

Exhibition: Outdoor Sculpture (Public Art) 15 Works of public art by 15 Ohio artists
Massillon Museum, 121 Lincoln Way East, downtown Massillon OH 44646

Free audio tours. A first look at fifteen sculptures by fifteen Ohio artists throughout the city. A free map will be available at the Museum, where an interactive sculptural piece, “Sacred Space” by Columbus artist Jim Bowling, will give visitors a first look at the community-wide exhibition. The map lists and locates the additional sculpture sites. Each sculpture will be accompanied by a plaque with a brief description and a phone number to call for a free cell phone audio tour. Compliments of Massillon Cable TV, visitors will be able to select each work of art individually on their mobile phones to learn about the artwork, the artist, and the history of the location. “A bonus of the cell phone tour is that people who just happen to come across one of the installations at random will be able to dial the cell phone tour number and learn about the entire exhibition,” said Mandy Altimus, the Museum staff member responsible for the audio segment of the project. Exhibition: Creativity Transcends

Akron Art Museum, One High Street, Akron OH 44308 330.376.9185

This specially organized exhibition represents an important next step in a growing relationship between the Akron Art Museum and United Disability Services. Over the years, artists and writers with disabilities have submitted their work with the hope of being published in United Disability Services’ Kaleidoscope, a magazine whose mission is to explore the experience of disability through literature and the fine arts. Now, nine of these visual artists from across the country whose art attained that honor are being further celebrated in this exhibition at the Akron Art Museum. They are Jerry Bontrager, Albuquerque, NM; John Bramblitt, Denton, TX; Julie Cohn, Berkeley, CA; Garry Curry, Vancouver Island, British Columbia; Alistair Green, Vancouver Island, British Columbia; Robert Harris, Cincinnati, OH; d’Elaine Johnson, Edmonds, WA; Elizabeth “Grandma” Layton (deceased), Lawrence, KS; and Linda Sibio, Joshua Tree, CA.

The show includes works of painting, drawing and sculpture. The exhibition’s title conveys the concept that it is both inaccurate and limiting to define a person solely by their disability.

When the first issue of Kaleidoscope was published in 1979, the idea was to provide a creative option in the vocational services program of the agency now known as United Disability Services. There was no grand vision for the future – just an opportunity for the people in the program to give shape and form to ideas, experiences and feelings.

Today the magazine is published twice a year and has evolved into an award-winning publication that is part of the collections of approximately 75 public and university libraries across the country, has subscribers on several continents and is recognized nationally and internationally for the quality of its articles, essays, fiction, poetry and art.

For those whose work is displayed, this is a thrilling, confirming moment. For visitors with disabilities, this can be a transforming experience of possibility for themselves. For the community in general, the message is that a disability should not define a person, that it is only one piece of who a person is and that in fact, creativity can and often does transcend!

Creativity Transcends is organized by the Akron Art Museum and United Disability Services. It is made possible by generous gifts from Akron Community Foundation, the Henry V. and Frances W. Christianson Charitable Foundation and the Parent Coalition For Persons With Disabilities.

Saturday Family Drop-In Days are made possible by County of Summit Regional Arts & Cultural District Board. www.AkronArtMuseum.org <http://www.akronartmuseum.org/>
