Weathervane Playhouse Announces Auditions for THE RAINMAKER

Weathervane Playhouse seeks to cast one woman and six men for The Rainmaker, which will open the Playhouse's 2008-09 season Sept. 4.

The London's Daily Mail called N. Richard Nash's The Rainmaker "a beautiful little comedy with a catch in its throat."

Lizzie Curry, a very plain young woman, lives on a drought-stricken Depression-era farm with her father and two brothers, who have been trying to marry her off. One day, an exciting man named Starbuck comes to the farm claiming to be a rainmaker. For a fee, he will make it rain. The family engages his services. He also begins to make romantic overtures toward Lizzie, who, after some hesitation, falls under his spell -- and, despite the fact that Lizzie knows he is a con man, Starbuck manages to make Lizzie see herself in a new light.

This romantic comedy was filmed for the silver screen in 1956 with Burt Lancaster and Katherine Hepburn. A musical adaptation, "110 in the Shade," played to packed houses on Broadway in 1963 -- and was revived in New York just last season in an acclaimed production starring Audra McDonald.
