Two local documentaries to premiere at the Cleveland Cinematheque

CLEVELAND, OH—The Cleveland Cinematheque announces two Ohio-based documentaries for its Premiere Showcase: Catching Salinger and The End of the World as We Knew It on June 14, 2008.

Catching Salinger
Premiers at 7:40 p.m.—60 minutes—www.catchingsalinger.com
The Catcher in the Rye was first published in 1951 to critical acclaim and enduring controversy. Many critics of modern literature consider it to be the most important American novel of the 20th century. It is the story of young Holden Caulfield, a troubled teen who has been expelled from prep school and his journey home to New York City.
The success of The Catcher in the Rye has been problematic for its author, J.D. Salinger, who retreated from intense media attention following the book’s publication. He has not published another story since 1965, though rumors persist that he has never stopped writing.
Catching Salinger is the documented journey of three Salinger fans from Cleveland who retrace Holden’s trip across the Northeast before setting out to find Salinger himself. It’s a love letter to the author, an exploration of the themes of The Catcher in the Rye, an investigation into what inspired Salinger’s writing, and what drove him into isolation.
Catching Salinger was directed by Charles Moore and James Renner. It stars Moore, Renner, and Rob Lucas.

The End of the World as We Knew It
Premiers at 9:30 p.m.—60 minutes—www.http://www.myspace.com/1079_the_end
The FCC Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed large corporations to devour local radio stations, force them to change formats, and required the elimination of many of their long-time workers. The End of the World as We Knew It takes a close look at the dramatic changes in mass media programming and the effects it had on 107.9-The End, Cleveland’s premiere alternative rock radio station during the 1990’s.
The End featured the best in alternative radio and was a nice addition to a Cleveland radio scene that boasted some of the most original programming in the country. The End was known for bringing several musical artists to U.S. radio such as the Cranberries and the Barenaked Ladies.
After being purchased by a national radio chain, the station continually played R.E.M.’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” during their last 24 hours on air.
The documentary is told through interviews with the people who knew the station best: the disc jockeys and staff, including: Ric “Rocco the Rock Dog” Bennett, Maria Farina, Pat “The Producer” Johnson (now on WKRK-FM), Brian Fowler and Joe Cronauer (Brian and Joe on WMVX-FM), Jim Benson (now on WKRKFM), Mike Olszewski (author of Radio Daze: Stories From the Front of Cleveland’s FM Air Wars and WNCX), Christina Grozik, Vic Gideon (now on WKYC-TV), Sue Csendes (now on WNCX), Vinnie Dombrowski (of the band Sponge) and several members of Reel Big Fish.
The End of the World as We Knew It is directed by Michael Wendt.

Free concert to follow movies
Following the films will be a free performance by Bluto’s Revenge (featuring Catching Salinger co-director Charles Moore) and Keith Aukeman (the musician behind the soundtrack of The End of the World as We Knew It) at the Rock Star stage in Peabody’s (2083 East 21st Street).
All films will be shown at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, 11141 East Boulevard in University Circle. Admission to each film is $8, Cinematheque members and CIA students and staff $6. Parking is available in the Institute lot.
