Meet Samuel Taylor Coleridge: Self-confessed dope addict, lazybones, failed family man and one of English Literature’s true greats as he nears the end of his 62-year-old life.
Geoffrey Darling's solo show examines the effect of laudanum ( alcohol and opium ) on the great man, who is attempting to perform The Ancient Mariner without recourse to his habitual drug of choice, without his usual safety net.
Hear also a finely spoken performance of Coleridge’s miniature masterpiece Kubla Khan and be asked “was it written in an opium dream as the poet claimed?”
* Hear Frost At Midnight and The Nightingale before Darling, as Coleridge, launches into a climactic and inspiring The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner.
* Hear Coleridge battle his constant desire to run away - from his studies, his responsibilities, his talent and his family ; the comedy of his quitting Cambridge and joining The Light Horse Dragoons and the sadness of his inability to love his wife ‘half as much as I love my children’.
* Well- researched anecdotes create a journey back through his life until it is time to sweep them all away with a victorious (and sober) performance of his greatest work, The Ancient Mariner. It’s a celebration of courage and a man's struggle to overcome his drug addiction – in just over one hour’s traffic on the stage.
Geoffrey Darling - the actor and writer - read the fine print -zoom buttom optional
Geoffrey Darling has been performing The Ancient Mariner for 23 years - long before he was ‘ancient’ – but now pushing 60 he’s getting to look like the old guy in the story - well at least in Dore’s drawings. Coleridge and The Ancient Mariner has an international flavour (Like the spelling). Although Geoffrey Darling is an Ohio resident he is a native New Zealander and has presented the work in that country more than 100 times – at colleges, schools, and theaters all over New Zealand – and one visit to England in 1998 .
He also performs The Gospel According to St Mark and this year began a special Prison Ministry in Ohio Institutions which is proving very popular. Cleveland’s Beck Center (including the hugely acclaimedEquus), Actors’ Summit ( A Child’s Christmas in Wales and Macbeth) and Magical Theater (Tuck Everlasting) are among his Ohio workplaces since arriving from New Zealand two years ago.
For more information: geoffrose05 at yahoo.com should shake him from his tree.
So - zoom down I-77 for a summer evening of Coleridge - and sip at Primo's Bar next door after the show.
