D. L. Coburn's much-loved, Pulitzer Prize winning play takes place on a sun porch at a "home for the aged".  There, crotchety Weller Martin meets new resident Fonsia Dorsey. To pass the time, Weller teaches Fonsia how to play gin and the two commiserate over the constant shuffling of cards.  Weller's quick temper and Fonsia's never-ending winning streak add humor while, at the same time, building to a nerve-shattering conclusion.

Director Tammy Hyde of Alliance cast Fred and Pam Weibel (also of Alliance and married in "real life") as the card playing couple.  The Weibels first performed "The Gin Game" eighteen years ago at Alliance's Carnation City Players.

"The Gin Game"  was first produced with Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, also a married couple, in 1978. Revised in 1997 with Charles Durning and Julie Harris, the play won a Tony as best revival. Television's famous "married" couple, Mary Tyler Moore and Dick Van Dyke took their turn as the two feisty elders in a PBS production.
