Roles Available
Seeking strong actor/singers between the ages of 13-18. All cast members
must be full time junior-high or high school students.
Mark Cohen – The “narrator” of the show; A documentary film maker, he uses
his camera to capture the lives of those in the East Village for his “
masterpiece”; Was in a relationship with Maureen Johnson; Lives with Roger Davis;
Although he sees everything thru his camera-lens, he also uses it as a veil to
hide behind emotionally – tries to constantly put on a “strong” front;
Wants to make a positive impact in this world, but is scared of “selling out” to
do so; One of the most emotionally complex characters in the show.
Roger Davis – Roommate of Mark Cohen; Contracted HIV from his ex-girlfriend
who later committed suicide in their bathroom; An aspiring
guitarist/songwriter, he wants nothing more than to write “one great song” before he succumbs
to AIDS; His past has left him emotionally scarred and very volatile;
Enters a very turbulent relationship with Mimi Marquez; He has to learn how to
love and trust again before he can ever find peace.
Tom Collins – Former roommates with Mark Cohen, Roger Davis, Benjamin
Coffin, and Maureen Johnson; An “educator” who was recently kicked out of MIT for
his radical theory of “actual reality”; HIV positive; Becomes romantically
involved with Angel Schunard; Like Angel, he wants those around him to
appreciate life in-spite of its pitfalls; A source of positive energy to his
friends; Even when faced with tremendous adversity, he is able to soldier on and
keep his head high.
Benjamin Coffin III – Former roommates with Roger Davis, Mark Cohen, Tom
Collins, and Maureen Johnson; Married into a wealthy family and is now the
landlord of his former roommates; Has become jaded by money and power; Tries to
see others’ dreams but ultimately cares more for his own reality; Has a brief
tryst with Mimi Marquez.
Angel Schunard – A drag queen who is equally comfortable in either gender;
Becomes involved romantically with Tom Collins; He is HIV positive, but in
spite of that, he lives his life to the fullest; A beacon of light and hope to
all of those he encounters; Perhaps the most emotionally stable character in
the play; Dies tragically from AIDS in Act 2.
Mimi Marquez – 19 years old, but thinks she is “old for her age”; Works as
a dancer at a gentleman’s club; A very sexual person by nature, she becomes
involved with Roger Davis; Perhaps lives life too fully as she she now a
full blown heroin addict; Needs love desperately.
Maureen Johnson – A performance artist who used to date Mark Cohen but is
now involved with Joanne Jefferson. Truly a “free-spirit” who is fully aware
of her sexuality and appeal to others (men and women alike). Doesn’t
necessarily see her treatment of others as “using”; Genuinely good at heart, but her
actions don’t always reflect this on the surface.
Joanne Jefferson – A lawyer by trade who has become romantically involved
with Maureen Johnson. She is also Maureen’s new production manager. Strong and
self-assured as a person, but insecure in her relationship with Maureen.
Ambitious in both her career and love-life; Joanne tries to “domesticate”
Maureen throughout the show.
Ensemble – Seeking a diverse ensemble to play artists, police, support group
members, and various other roles. All ensemble members must be exceptional
actors and singers. Understudies for principal roles will be chosen from the
ensemble.
