ALESSANDRA BELLONI is a singer, percussionist, dancer and actress who stands
as one of the most important voices of traditional Southern Italian music
and dance today. As artist-in-residence at the Cathedral of St. John the
Divine, Belloni is Artistic Dir. and Founder of I Giullari di Piazza
(Players of the Square). Acclaimed as one of the greatest living
percussionists in the world, she has also designed tambourines for Remo

VERLEZZA DANCE presents a workshop to introduce the rich tambourine and
dance traditions of Southern Italy and the Tarantella, an ancient ritual
performed to cure the mythical bite of the tarantula. Students will learn
the techniques of Tarantella tambourine playing, and the truly healing and
stress relieving effect of these rhythms and dance, and the history of this
ancient tradition.
