I went to see " Milk" with my girlfriend who is visiting from the west coast. We connected to the San Francisco we both knew and loved in the late sixties/early seventies. We connected to the spirit of Harvey Milk and the choices he made, knowing that he could and would be a moving target for being who he was....... out........honest.......politically active...... and encouraging other tortured souls to do the same. At the sacrifice of a quiet personal peace, he chose to be the voice for and catalyst of change for hundreds of thousands of gay people far beyond the streets of San Francisco.
I  left San Francisco in 1971. I knew of Harvey Milk, but seeing the movie educated me a hundred fold more about the man. the message and the movement he led and inspired.
My friend wept for her own reasons..... memories of the actual event, being a participant in the candlelight vigil after he died and remembering the personal grief she experienced as an activist and resident of the city of San Francisco.
Sean Penn's performance was right on, but most importantly, in my opinion, if a work of "art," be it theater, music, film,
painting or any form of self-expression, engages and touches me on an
emotional, spiritual, intellectual or physical level, then it has served its purpose. It need be no less flawed or perfect than I.......... to be felt, absorbed and appreciated.
