“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
—Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

WILBERFORCE is the epic story based in the year 1856, of Shepard, a free man of color and full-time pig slaughterer, who strives to keep his ailing daughter, Dannie, alive. But when Wilberforce, America’s first black college opens next door to his home in Green County, Ohio, his son’s aspiration of being well-educated threatens his tight-knit family and the safety of his daughter. Mixed ancestry, sickle-cell anemia, and the hysteria created by a need to be “civilized” haunt the halls of Wilberforce.

WILBERFORCE, the engaging and controversial work by playwright and screenwriter Keith Josef Adkins pits progress against tradition and self-fulfillment against bonds of family. Adkins’ other works include SAFE HOUSE, a commission honoring August Wilson from the Alliance Theater (Goodman Theater New Stages Series), FAREWELL MISS COTTON (Black Dahlia Theater - Los Angeles. WILBERFORCE was originally developed as staged readings at Cleveland Public Theatre and the National Black Theater Festival. Both play and playwright won Best New Play and Playwright awards at the New Play Festival at Cleveland Public Theatre.

This area premiere is being staged by Cleveland director, Jimmie Woody. This marks Woody's first collaboration with Cleveland State University. He has directed in other are theatres such as Cleveland Public Theatre, Karamu House, and Cuyahoga Community College. WIBERFORCE features CSU students Kevin Marr, II, Tamara Isabell, Bryan Jones, and Arana Lynch and Cuyahoga Community College student Joella Blount.
