Medina Cultural Heritage Day Planned for August 29, 2009

Full Day of Global Art, Food, Entertainment

 

(Medina, Ohio- April 28, 2009) – Main Street Medina is pleased to announce
plans for the First Annual Medina Cultural Heritage Day, scheduled for
Saturday, August 29, 2009, from 10am to 10pm. The twelve hour event will
feature international foods, art, music, and other entertainment, as well as
activities for families and a Children’s Parade of Nations. The goal of the
celebration is to promote and recognize the rich heritage and cultural
diversity of our community, to encourage social interaction and the
enjoyment of family entertainment on the Medina Square, and to bring the
world to Medina. The event is sponsored by the J.M. Smucker Company, Redwood
Management, Hunter/Westfield Insurance, Community West Foundation, Gymboree
Play & Music, Armstrong Cable, Buehler’s Fresh Foods, Medina Rotary, Medina
Sunrise Rotary, and Westfield Bank.

 

Main Street Medina is currently recruiting cultural/ethnic/internationally
based groups, organizations, church groups, or other entities to participate
in a huge international bazaar, featuring works of art, crafts, merchandise,
pottery, fashion, and collectibles from around the globe. Artists, ethnic
and cultural interest groups, or churches with a particularly strong ethnic
heritage are encouraged to contact Main Street Medina at

registration. 

 

A “Taste of Nations” will feature foods from around the world. Local
restaurants and other food vendors highlighting ethnic foods are also
encouraged to contact Main Street Medina for participation and registration
information. The area behind Main Street Café will be transformed into an
international village with a festive atmosphere, featuring international
beer, wine, and cheese tastings, along with the stage for the closing event
celebration.

Main Street Medina Announces 3rd Annual Chalk Art Festival

 

(Medina, Ohio- March 26, 2009) –Main Street Medina has announced plans for
the 3rd Annual Chalk Art Festival, scheduled for Saturday, May 30th from
9am-5pm. The festival will be held in the historic business district around
the town square. In addition to the live chalk art demonstrations, there
will be demonstrations and classes by Asian Martial Arts, children’s
activities, and fun for the whole family. The event will be held rain or
shine.

 

The 3rd Annual Chalk Art Festival will feature over 20 professional artists
creating original works of art in chalk and pastel on large boards. Each
artist and their work is sponsored by a merchant or business in the Historic
District. In addition to the professional artists, art students from Oberlin
College, Cleveland Institute of Art, and Baldwin Wallace College are
anticipated to participate. Children of the community may sign up the day of
the event to create chalk drawings on the sidewalks in and around the
square. 

 

All chalk art will be created between 9am-3pm, and judging will take place
between 3-5pm. Prizes and awards will be given to the top three in each
category, Professional, College, High School, and Children. Following the
Festival, the boards will be displayed in storefronts throughout the
Historic District. 

 

Applications for professional and college artists are being accepted until

Ladies Night Out Scheduled for May 21, 2009 in Medina 

(Medina, Ohio- April 15th, 2009) – Ladies—treat yourself and your
girlfriends to a night on the town in historic Medina, Ohio. Come downtown,

then hit the town for an evening of fun! From 5pm to 8pm, many of the

Main Street Medina Announces 2009-2010 World Tour of Music Performers

 

(Medina, Ohio- April 28, 2009) – Main Street Medina today announced the
upcoming 2009-2010 World Tour of Music Concert Series season. Following the
critically successful first year, the second season will continue to bring
more diverse, nationally and internationally known performers to Medina.
Main Street Medina is particularly excited to feature the St. Petersburg
String Quartet from St. Petersburg, Russia.  Individual subscriptions for
the 2009-2010 season are $80.00, and may be purchased from Main Street
Medina. An order form may also be downloaded at

performances begin at 8pm, and are held at the DeLorre and Lily Jean Haddad
Theatre/Broadway Hall, 144 N. Broadway, Medina, OH 44256.

 

The season begins on September 12, 2009 with rising baritone, Scott Skiba,
accompanied by Steven Gross, nationally acclaimed pianist, as they embrace
some of the most beloved American songs ranging from Stephen Foster, George
Gershwin, Cole Porter, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and numerous
Broadway favorites! Skiba has sung in countless places including
Indianapolis Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Louisiana Lyric Opera, the Akron
Symphony Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Pops. He was a featured soloist on
The Young Artists Showcase, on WQXR - The Classical Radio Station of The New
York Times. 

 

The second show in the series will feature The St. Petersburg String Quartet
on November 7th, 2009. One of the world's leading string quartets, this
quartet has blazed a trail through international chamber music competitions,
winning First Prize at the All-Soviet Union String Quartet Competition, the
Silver Medal and a Special Prize at the Tokyo International Competition of
Chamber Ensembles, First Prize and both Special Prizes at the Vittorio Gui
International Competition for Chamber Ensembles in Florence, Italy, and
First Prize and the "Grand Prix Musica Viva" at the International
Competition for Chamber Ensembles in Melbourne, Australia. Audiences around
the globe give the St. Petersburg Quartet standing ovations.

 

Perennial Medina favorites, The University of Akron Steel Drum Band, under
the direction of Dr. Larry Snider and Matt Dudak, returns for a command
performance on February 6, 2010 for an evening of high energy Caribbean
rhythms. This Grammy nominated, charismatic group brings you the joyous
music of Trinidad and Tobago. Delighting audiences of all ages, this is an
evening you will not want to miss. 

 

“Inspirational Groove” comes to Medina on April 3rd, 2010 as The Prayer
Warriors gospel choir takes you on a musical tour of everything from R&B and
jazz, to funk and gospel. You will be in for an explosive treat as this
dynamic ensemble brings you hits from the Staple Singers, Temptations,
O’Jays, & Stevie Wonder, along with their original songs.  Accompanied by
their very own four-piece rhythm section (The Thunder Band), this
Cleveland-based group is in high demand and has performed with Diana Ross,
Foreigner, Josh Groban and Peter, Paul and Mary.

Main Street Medina Announces 2009-2010 Events Calendar 

 

(Medina, Ohio- April 15th, 2009) Main Street Medina today announced their

May 21, 2009: Open For Business: Business Recruitment Open House, 4-7pm

On one night, all available retail and office space within the nine block
historic district will be open for inspection by entrepreneurs and
interested business persons who would like to join the thriving community
around the Square. An opening reception will be held in Towne Square
Commons, 23 Public Square, at 4pm. Then, after viewing the properties and
experiencing downtown, join representatives from area banks and the City of
Medina Economic Development Department from 6-7 at Eastwood Furniture, 23
Public Square, to get information on business incentive and start-up
programs.

 

May 30, 2009: 3rd Annual Chalk Art Fest, 9am-2pm & Asian Martial Arts
Demonstration,. 1-3pm

Plan your day around this family-friendly, fun event, as over 20
Professional, College, and High School artists create amazing works of art
in pastel on boards sponsored by district businesses. Bring the kids to the
Square to get a bucket of chalk, and make it a family art day out as you
create your own masterpieces on the sidewalks in and around the Square.
Prizes and goodies will be awarded in all categories. 

 

July 19, 2009: “Find Picasso’s Paint Brush” Scavenger Hunt, 9am-5pm

Get your sleuthing skills ready as you explore the many fun stores around
the historic district in search of the elusive Picasso’s Paint Brush. Get at
least 10 stamps from merchants, then turn in your search map to win fun and
valuable prizes.

 

Aug. 8, 2009: Historic District Sidewalk Sale, 9am-5pm

Start your holiday shopping early, stock up on birthday gifts, or treat
yourself to something special and unique from one of the many independent,
locally owned businesses. Great deals abound as the stores start to make way
for fall merchandise.

 

Aug. 29, 2009: Medina Cultural Heritage Day 10am-10pm

Set aside the entire day to immerse you and your family in the many
cultures, ethnicities, and diversities found throughout Medina and the
world! Continuous music throughout the day will introduce musical styles
from around the globe; a huge international bazaar will offer ethnic art,
information, and clothing; and a grand international food court will feature
favorite ethnic foods to tempt and challenge your taste buds. A wealth of
family and children’s activities will be offered.

 

Sept. 12, 2009: World Tour of Music: Scott Skiba, baritone 8:00pm curtain

Join us for the first of four amazing concerts, featuring a potpourri of
musical styles and offerings. Scott Skiba, a rising star in the American
music scene will be joined by nationally known pianist Steven Gross, as they
perform classics from the American Songbook and Broadway favorites (at the
DeLorre and Lilly Jean Haddad Broadway Hall Auditorium).

sidewalks will be lined with over 1,300 luminaries, the square and gazebo
will be decked out in greenery and lit up beautifully. A full weekend of
events, music, trolley and carriage rides, seasonal sales, and the perennial
favorite, the Holiday Parade of Lights on Saturday night! Visits with Santa
Claus, snow on the ground, and a spirit in the air make this a family
favorite activity for all.

 

Feb. 6, 2010: World Tour of Music: University of Akron Steel Drum Band,
8:00pm curtain

The University of Akron Steel Drum Band will once again rock the walls of
Broadway Hall with Island favorites and a few surprises! Always full of
energy and fun, the Steel Drum Band concert has quickly become a Medina
entertainment institution (at the DeLorre and Lilly Jean Haddad Broadway
Hall Auditorium).

 

Feb. 2-15, 2010: Medina Ice Festival with Elegant Ice, all weekend, hours
vary

The ice will be flying as professional and amateur contestants vie for top
honors in several competitions! Take a stroll throughout the historic
district to enjoy the amazing works of ice art, sponsored by participating
merchants.

 

Mar. 20, 2010: Around the Town 5k Run and Walk 2010 (tent. date) race begins
at 8:00am

Join fellow runners on a scenic race or walk through Medina and compete for
fantastic prizes and gift certificates. 

 

Apr. 3, 2010: World Tour of Music: The Prayer Warriors, 8:00pm curtain

A powerhouse of sound, the Prayer Warriors brought the house down at the
2008 Candlelight Walk! Merging Gospel favorites with a Motown rock style,
this talented group will have you dancing in the aisles (at the DeLorre and
Lilly Jean Haddad Broadway Hall Auditorium)
