EDU.565.PD6 Assessing Musical Skills and Understandings
June 22-26; 6:00 - 9:00 pm; Dietsch Hall 203
Dr. Herbert D. Marshall, Instructor; 1 credit; $175
Explore the when, why and how of assessing student achievement in music. Learn testing options and work to develop your own exams, rubrics, and ratings -- the workshop will focus on teacher-designed assessment of learning as a tool to improve instruction, reflect on curriculum, and evaluate learners. Basic components of measurement, such as mean, median, mode, and distribution, will be presented. More time, however, will be spent on applying these concepts to teacher-designed rubrics, rating scales, and tests for formative and summative assessment. Please bring assessment examples you'd like to refine and samples of student work you'd like to evaluate.

We will learn foundational repertoire focused on singing and pitched and unpitched percussion. Movement strategies will nurture body awareness, coordination, pulse, game songs, and folk dance. Participants will enhance recorder skills and teaching techniques.
