THE STORY:

The action of the play concerns a divorced couple, Elyot and Amanda, who meet on then-respective honeymoons to second spouses. They realize that they are still in love with each other and should never have divorced; they abandon their new spouses and run off together, though they are soon caught up in the same violent arguments that originally plagued their stormy marriage. Their aggrieved spouses appear and a rondelay of affiliations ensues as the women first stick together, then apart, and new partnerships are formed. Eventually there is a knock down drag out fight which opens the eyes of Elyot and Amanda, who then steal off together for a second time. A unique play with several successful Broadway runs featuring, Laurence Olive, Gertrude Lawrence, Alan Rickman, Tullulah Bankhead, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

Sorry, no Equity contracts for this production. No need to prepare a monologue.  I will have you read directly from the script. These folks are VERY English so please bring your "A list" dialect. Additional auditions and callbacks only as necessary;  ALL ROLES ARE COMPENSATED.

Production and Rehearsal dates:
Private Lives will open on Friday, September 25 and run through October 11, 2009-- Friday through Sunday. Of course you will be compensated for all performances. Rehearsals will begin sometime in mid August. Don't worry we will work around vacation schedules. THERE WILL BE ONE STUDENT MATINEES (THAT WILL BE COMPENSATED ALSO) on Thursday or Friday, October 1, 2, 8 or 9; 9:30am till 12noon).

WITH ONLY FOUR ROLES IN THIS PLAY, EACH CHARACTER IS  WONDERFUL AND COMPELLINGLY DRAWN. SURELY EACH OF THESE ROLES WILL BE CHALLENGING AND FUN TO PLAY. A VERY THEATRICAL PIECE.  SOME SAY THE SECOND ACT IS THE CLOSEST THING TO THEATRICAL PERFECTION.

The Roles:

Elyot Chase (30's): The witty and cynical Elyot is the male lead, whose love/hate relationship with Amanda forms the centerpiece of Private Lives. Though his occupation (if any) is unidentified, he is wealthy and fashionable, accustomed to luxury, and self-indulgent. In conversation, his habit is to “be flippant” and mock traditional social conventions; if he has a philosophy, it lies in his refusal to ever be serious. He holds to no Great Truths; everything is “nonsense” in the long run.

Amanda Prynne (30's): As Coward’s heroine, Amanda is sharp-witted and glamorous, strong-willed and passionate. By abandoning Victor (and by being sexually active while unmarried), she defies the conventional, reserved, and subordinate role for her gender — especially as dictated by the society of the first half of the twentieth century. Her relationship with Elyot, though hopelessly plagued by their hateful bickering.
She and Elyot are intellectual equals and comfortable companions, at least in the moments between their violent conflicts.

Victor Prynne (30's): Steadfastly conventional and self-consciously masculine, Victor is the conservative counterpart to Elyot’s rebellious flippancy. Habitually “serious,” proper, and moderate in all things, he is paternally protective of Amanda.

Sybil Chase (early to mid 20's):
Sybil is an atractive first-time bride who is more than a little threatened by her new husband's first wife, Amanda. As the blushing bride, she is bubbly and romantic, deferring to her husband and denying any intention to “manage” or run his life. Cast as the abandoned wife, she gives way to dramatic tears and self-pity, while demonstrating an ability to “manage” both Victor and Elyot in order to get her way. Sibyl is supposed to be seven years younger than her husband Elyot. She is more than a little threatened by Elyot's first wife Amanada.

The aforementioned roles are great and demand great actors!
