Music and New Lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
Directed and Choreographed by Pierre-Jacques Brault
Musical Directed by Eddie Carney
Opening Friday July 10th, 2009
At the Parma Little Theatre
6285 W 54th Street, Parma, OH 44129
We can Build a Beautiful City!
Mercury’s 30th mainstage production is the Stephen Schwartz (Wicked,
Pippin, Children of Eden) / John-Michael Tebelak 1970 musical
Godspell, playing July 10th through the 25th at the Parma Little
Theatre. Originally conceived by Tebelak as his Masters Thesis at
Carnegie Mellon University, Godspell is one of Off-Broadway and
Broadways biggest success stories of all time. The show, based on
The Gospel According to St. Matthew, derives its title from the
archaic spelling of the word gospel. Consisting of a series of skits
based on the parables of Jesus and interspersed with a variety of
modern music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns,
Godspell’s timeless message remains about finding your quiet,
unshakable faith amid a very loud, cold, and very often-shallow
modern world. Cast members have included Victor Garber (Alias), Gilda
Radner (SNL), Martin Short (The Goodbye Girl) and Eugene Levy (Second
City).
Baldwin-Wallace College senior theatre student, Zachary De Nardi
portrays Jesus in the MSS production and is joined onstage by a crew
of Mercury regulars including Kelvette Beacham, Molly Richards, Brian
Marshall, Shane O’Neill, Jennifer Myor, Sara Masterson and Annie
Hickey. Rounding out the cast are newcomers Brett Parr, Stewart
Tabler, Kate Michalski, Andrew Miller and Bryant Campbell. Directed
and Choreographed by Mercury’s Artistic Director Pierre-Jacques
Brault with the Musical Direction of Eddie Carney this Godspell ties
in the relevance of the 2000 year-old gospel message in our
technologically-based and fast-paced world of today. Featuring such
internationally recognized songs as “Day By Day”, “All Good Gifts”,
and “Beautiful City”, Godspell continues Mercury’s tradition of
entertaining, enlightening, and celebrating the best of the human
spirit through musical theatre. Godspell fills our stage with vibrant
exuberance, artistic imagination and contemporary relevance, and will
have you celebrating right along with the cast on our stage!
