*The Play *

One of the most influential attorneys of the 19th and 20th centuries,
Clarence Darrow was at the cutting edge of liberal causes from 1880 until
his death in 1938. From the Scopes Monkey Trial, to Leopold & Loeb, from his
defense of Eugene V. Debbs and the labor movement, to his defense of Dr.
Ossian Sweet and the fight against racial prejudice, Clarence Darrow was the
most famous attorney of his generation.

In this one man play, Darrow reminisces about his childhood in Ohio, his law
practice in Ashtabula Ohio, and his five decade career in the courts.
Glimpses of his personal life alternate with scenes from his most famous
cases. A staunch opponent of the death penalty, he defended 102 men who
faced the death penalty and not one of them were hanged. Darrow reviews much
of America's legal history with salty humor, courtroom gusto and human
relish.**

*The Cast*

*Neil Thackaberry, who performed the play in 2005 received critical acclaim
for his portrayal. The founder and artistic director of Actor’s Summit,
Thackaberry has performed at the Cleveland Play House, Great Lakes Theatre
Festival, and Ensemble Theatre in addition to his frequent appearances at
Actors’ Summit. *

*The Critics*

And the big bluff talents of Neil Thackaberry make you forget that you're in
a theater, watching a performer. You find yourself sitting in Darrow's
study, nodding and chuckling. … Here on display for all to see is the
sublime poetry and fascinating wreckage of a great lawyer. Tony Brown,
Cleveland Plain Dealer

A. Neil Thackaberry is Darrow. His task is daunting. The number of lines to
memorize is awesome! Thackaberry is excellent! His performance is relaxed
and offhanded. He wisely doesn’t fake an orator’s voice. He invites us
into his thoughts and memories as if they are completely spontaneous. He
adds vocalized pauses and thought spaces to create total naturalism. Roy
Berko, The Times Newspapers

“Clarence Darrow” gives local audiences a chance to see a first-rate
performance by Neil Thackaberry. … Darrow’s stories cover many years, but
everything is told as a reflection on the past. Thackaberry makes Darrow
charming, kind and brilliant. By the end of the play, I wanted to have lunch
with either Thackaberry or Darrow. Thackaberry’s excellent acting had lifted
me to a point of not knowing where the actor ended and the character
started. David Ritchey, West Side Leader

The play's conversational style as well as Thackaberry's sheer skill and
striking demeanor in creating this intimate story make for an engrossing
experience. … It only takes one fine actor to create human drama. That's
part of the power of live theater: It makes history come alive. Kerry
Clawson, Akron Beacon Journal
