Greg Violand, left, with Lew Wallace and Melissa CrumRoy Berko on RETURN TO
THE FORBIDDEN PLANET

Roy
<http://royberkinfo.blogspot.com/2009/07/return-to-forbidden-planet.html>
says:

The CSU production, under the creative direction of Michael Mauldin, is well
staged and has all the right ridiculousness needed to make this a fun
production. Lynn Deering's fine choreography adds to the hilarity.

The cast is universally excellent. Handsome Lew Wallace. has a fine singing
voice and dances well. Greg Violand, he of great singing voice. is properly
fake-evil as scientist Prospero. John Paul Soto sparkles. Tracee Patterson
sings and mugs her way through the role of the bad/good Gloria... The rest
of the cast is up to the task of creating the right degree of the faux
seriousness. This is a difficult undertaking, because there is often a
temptation in this type of show to over- do the action. This would have
brought about a less comic result.

But wait. there's more!

Joseph says:

The play's greatest feat is the way it lovingly echoes Chekhov's actual
works. The production itself was like watching alchemy happen. To start at
the top, we pay tribute to the director Cathy Hartenstein. Rarely has the
magic hand of a skilled director been so evident.

.

Not to forget the actors. The rueful compassion of Greg Violand's Chekhov,
the rose-hued, gentle elegance of Tracee Patterson's Olga, the bombastic,
egotistical fervor of Doug Miller's Stanislavski, and the comic/melancholy
verve of the rest of the company all combine to create an exquisite living
canvas.

It doesn't get much better than that, does it?

and SHADOW BOX

Tony
<http://www.cleveland.com/onstage/index.ssf/2009/07/cleveland_state_universi
ty_sum.html> Brown says:

Now in its third and strongest season, the mixed professional-student
company succeeds best at its two extremes, the heart-rending death-drama
"The Shadow Box" and the farcical outer-space musical "Return to the
Forbidden Planet."

.

There is nothing ridiculous about Quinton's masterfully balanced
reincarnation of "The Shadow Box," Michael Cristofer's Pulitzer
Prize-winning 1977 play about three families dealing with imminent deaths in
three backwoods cabins at an experimental California hospice.

.

Mauldin pulls out all the nutty stops for his scatterbrained production of
the wafer-thin but highly entertaining "Return to the Forbidden Planet," Bob
Carlton's mash-up of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and the 1956 sci-fi romance
"Forbidden Planet," all set to rock 'n' roll from the late 1950s and early
'60s.

.

Several students turn in exemplary performances, too, including dashing dork
Lew Wallace as the Capt. Kirk hero, brawny Lawrence Charles as the
Caliban-esque Cookie, John Paul Soto as a sweet-voiced, roller-skating robot
version of Ariel and fresh-faced Melissa Crum as Miranda.

Now what?

A Friend in Need.

CSU Summer Stages is facing considerable financial difficulties. With the
recent economic downturn, Summer Stages has been forced to cut its budget
significantly. This has adversely affected all aspects of production, from
the number of students we can hire to the amount they are paid to marketing
and materials. But you can help! Donations of any size are welcomed and
encouraged. It's as easy as buying a CD on Amazon and you'll feel a lot
better about yourself!
