LAKEWOOD BUSINESS OWNER APPOINTED TO BOARD

Local program provides free lessons in music and drama to 150 disadvantaged Cleveland youth

Cleveland, Ohio (October 9, 2009) – The Joyful Noise Neighborhood Music School is pleased to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Nici to its Board of Directors.

Nici, 30, is the Owner and Chief Designer of Gusto Designs, LLC in Lakewood, Ohio.  She is a member of the Associate Board of Directors of Shoes and Clothes for Kids and 2nd Vice President of the Junior Women’s Club of Lakewood.  In business since 2003, Gusto Designs specializes in large non-profits as well as small-to-large corporations.

JNMS Executive Director Ric Wilberg praised Nici’s passion for the arts as well as her experience as a business owner.  “We appreciate her knowledge of graphic design and running a successful business and believe she will play an essential role in our long-term growth,” he said.

Joyful Noise Neighborhood Music School provides free lessons to children ages 3-13 whose families could otherwise not afford them.  Lessons are taught by 24 teachers in a growing list of instrument and programs including violin, piano, guitar, wind instruments, brass instruments, rhythm, percussion, voice and drama. The project was started in 2004 with 13 students and now serves nearly 150.    JNMS works with volunteer musicians of all ages, backgrounds and levels of experience who want to “give back” to the community.  Located in Cleveland, Ohio, JNMS is able to provide free use of instruments through grants and donations.  JNMS also provides scholarships, free tickets to concerts and events, visits from professional musicians, invitations to perform in community recitals, a summer string institute, and the gift of an instrument upon graduation.

Nici graduated from Mercyhurst College in 2001 with a combined degree in Art, Graphic Design and Marketing.  She began studying piano at a young age and continued throughout college, and nearly majored in Music Performance.  She credits that experience for her confidence as an adult anda business person.

“Joyful Noise is a vital organization in a time when music and art programs are being cut from schools,” Nici noted.  “I am delighted to support Joyful Noise with my time and talents because it exposes children to music and gives them an opportunity to become proficient on an instrument.”

Joyful Noise is generously funded by the Ohio Arts Council, the Cleveland Foundation, Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, the United Black Foundation, the George Gund Foundation and Neighborhood Connections.  Their community partners include the Beck Center, Baldwin-Wallace University, Heights Youth Theater, Tri-c Theater, Cleveland Pops, Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Institute of Music and Contemporary Youth Orchestra.
