The University of Akron School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts
Administration opens its 2009–2010 season with Shakespeare’s most exciting
romantic comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, in a production directed by UA
theatre faculty member Dr. Susan Speers.
Dr. Speers places this boisterous battle of the sexes in the fantastical
setting of the colorful Commedia dell' Arte. Some call her plain Kate, to
others she is Kate the Cursed. Regardless of her reputation, Petruchio has
fashioned a “shrewd” plan to tame her for his wife. However, Kate has ideas
of her own, most of them vicious, and none involving marriage. Deceit and
disguise add to the mayhem as mistaken identity and misunderstandings
collide with hilarious consequences. This wild production of the Bard’s most
outrageous comedy is full of slapstick humor, sharp wit, and a gaggle of
colorful characters.
In the all-student cast, Akron’s own, senior India Burton , and
sophomore Miranda Roth play Katherine on alternating nights. Sophomore,
Robert S. Grant III plays her husband to be, Petruchio .
    Performances are October 15-17 and 22-24 at 8 p.m. and October 18 at 2
p.m. at the Paul A. Daum Theater in Kolbe Hall, on The University of Akron
campus. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $10 for seniors/UA faculty
and staff/UA alumni/parents of UA students, and $6 for students. A group
discount is available in advance for 10 or more patrons. For reservations
call (330) 972-7895.
