EVERLASTING MOMENTS
In this breathtaking film, a woman experiences an artistic awakening
after being introduced to photography. Based on real-life events, the
story opens in Sweden in the early 1900's. In a time of social change
and unrest, war and poverty, Maria, a young working class woman, wins a
camera in a lottery. The camera grants her new eyes with which to see
the world making her alcoholic, womanizing husband feel threatened by
his wife's newfound outlook on life.

Friday, November 6, 2009 - 7:30pm
DEPARTURES
Winner - Academy Award - Best Foreign Language Film. DEPARTURES is a
delightful journey into Japan and a look at a sacred part of the
cultural heritage. Daigo Kobayashi is a devoted cellist who finds
himself out of a job when his orchestra is dissolved. He answers an ad
entitled "Departures" thinking it's a job for a travel agency only to
discover that it's for a "Nokanshi" or "encoffineer," a funeral
professional who prepares bodies for burial and entry into the next
life. Though dealing with death and other dark themes, the overall
approach of the film is upbeat and the tone eccentric, based on the
director's philosophy that "most humans are comical by nature."
