2010 Winter Session Offerings at the CVWW

Class No. 1: The Art of Fiction: Short Story & Novel with Scott Lax

Consecutive Tuesdays from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. Jan. 19, 26; Feb. 2,
9, 16 & 23

Cost: $180 for six sessions. $150 for former Scott Lax students.

CLASS DESCRIPTION: Do you want to write fiction that grabs readers and
keeps them reading? This class is where you learn the art and craft of
character, plot, setting, dialogue, point of view and how to weave
elements together into fiction that lives and breathes. The classes
are fun, challenging, and are for anyone from beginners to
accomplished writers. You will come out of this a better writer if you
really want it.

FICTION TESTIMONIAL: “Scott Lax is a gifted teacher and writer who
manages to bring knowledge and sensitivity to the critiquing process.
His insights and commentary foster a nurturing workshop environment
within which noticeable creative progress can be and is achieved. The
number of returning students who repeat his workshops is a testament
to his skill and appeal as both an instructor and purveyor of the
written word.” – Michael Ferrari, two-time student of Scott Lax and
the author of Born to Fly, winner of the 2007 Delacorte Yearling Award
for middle grade fiction. Publisher’s Weekly, Kirkus Reviews and
Booklist critically acclaimed his novel. (Go to http://www.scottlax.com/events.htm

Class No. 2: The Art of Literary Nonfiction: Essay & Memoir with Scott
Lax

Consecutive Saturdays from 1 PM until 3 PM. Jan. 16, 23, 30; Feb. 6,
13 & 20

Cost: $180 for six sessions; $150 for former Scott Lax students.

Class description: Literary Nonfiction is telling the truth in a way
that is lyrical, compelling and true. It is not a kind of distorted
“creative nonfiction” where facts are fudged for the sake of a good
story. When a reader reads well-written essays and memoirs, he or she
trusts that the words are truthful and the author is saying something
new about his or her subject. This class will teach you how to look
deeper at your subject – even if it is yourself – and put it on paper
in a dynamic way. If you apply yourself you’ll emerge from this class
with new skills – but also new understandings about your writerly
self, and about how you look at the world as a writer.

NONFICTION TESTIMONIAL: “I had just begun a second nonfiction book
when I joined Scott’s writing workshop. The timing turned out to be
perfect. Not only were the classes enjoyable and interesting in their
own right, they proved an investment with an immediate return in terms
of my new work. I found Scott to be informative, authoritative,
nurturing, encouraging, and unselfish and open in his approach to
teaching. I highly recommend enrolling in his classes.” - Mark C.
Brown, Ph.D. (For more testimonials, go to http://www.scottlax.com/events.htm.)

LIMIT: 6 STUDENTS PER SESSION. Register early to assure your spot.

Manuscript Line Edit and Consultation with Scott Lax

Do you have an essay, short story, nonfiction manuscript or novel that
needs something – but you’re not sure what – before you send it out to
agents, editors or publishers? Scott Lax will read your manuscript,
line edit it, and suggest possible changes in plot, character
development, setting, pacing, dialogue or, where appropriate, leave it
alone and let you know what works. Consultations are based on Scott
Lax’s availability and initial consultation as to whether he thinks he
can be of help.

The fee for this service is $5.00/page, with a 20-page minimum and 400-
page maximum. The service includes a post-edit and written report
consultation, not to exceed one hour for book-length manuscripts, and
half-hour for short story and essays.
