SOMEbody at the Academy has the humanity to nominate *A Serious Man* for
Best Picture. My bet, however, is that it will lose to something aimed at
the 14-year-old audience. Never mind: these are the guys who picked *Titanic
* over *The Full Monty*, anything over *Good Night and Good Luck*,
and*Forrest Gump
* over anything. Clearly a group whose judgment and taste are not to be
trusted. Still: further rich occasion to consider why, as a culture, so many
of us are willing to give such importance and credence to this silly
prize-giving hysteria. It's like buying the advertisement as well as the
product.
