"DOUBT, a Parable"

Award-winning drama comes to

 Coach House Theatre March 25-April 11

($10 Preview Performance, Thursday, March 25 only)

 

Akron's Coach House Theatre is proud to present the award-winning,
thought-provoking drama, "DOUBT, a Parable," opening March 25.

The story is set in a Bronx Catholic School in the 1960s. Sister Aloysius
(Dede Klein), the steadfastly traditional principal who believes in strict
discipline, makes a serious accusation against the young popular priest (Joe
Pine). A harrowing battle of wills ensues, and audiences are sure to come
out of the theater with lots to think about and discuss.

There will be a special $10 preview performance Thursday, March 25 only, at
8 p.m.

 The Director

One of Coach House's two Artistic Directors, Nancy Cates directed our season
opener this past fall, Deathtrap. In past seasons she has directed Steel
Magnolias, Barrymore's Ghost, Tonight at 8:30, Driving Miss Daisy, Oh,
Coward!, and Hay Fever. She is also one of the two Artistic Directors of the
Ohio Shakespeare Festival, which performs each summer at Stan Hywet Hall &
Gardens, as well as periodically at Coach House and the Players Guild of
Canton.

Nancy is a member of Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC).

 

The Playwright

A celebrated playwright, director and screenwriter, John Patrick Shanley is
a native of the Bronx in New York City, where the story of DOUBT, A PARABLE,
a Parable takes place. He has authored more than 20 plays. His screenplay
for the 1987 film Moonstruck won him an Academy Award for Best Original
Screenplay. 

In 2005, DOUBT, a Parable was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the
Drama Desk Award and Tony Award for Best Play. Cherry Jones received the
Tony Award for Best Leading Actress for her performance as Sister Aloysius.

The 2008 movie version of the play, Doubt, directed by Shanley, starred
Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams and Viola Davis. All four
actors received Academy Award nominations for their performances in the
acclaimed film. In 2004, Shanley was inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame.

DOUBT, a Parable audiences can also see another of Shanley's plays, Italian
American Reconciliation, at Weathervane Playhouse later this spring.

 

"DOUBT, a Parable" will be presented March 25-April 11. Curtain times are
Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m.
Dinner or Brunch is available to all theatre patrons prior to every
performance at the Akron Woman's City Club next door.

 

Tickets are $16. The box office opens one hour before the show. Coach House
Theatre is located at 732 W. Exchange Street, in Akron, next to the Akron
Woman's City Club, and at the corner of W. Exchange and N. Portage Path.
