They're Playing Our Song

 

A Musical Comedy

Book by Neil Simon; music by Marvin Hamlisch; lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager

 

Audition Dates:

Tuesday, April 20 beginning at 7 p.m. 

Thursday, April 22 beginning at 7 p.m.

(10-minute increments)

12 Performance Dates:

Thursdays, September 9, 16, 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Fridays and Saturdays, September 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25 at 8 p.m.

Sundays, September 12, 19, 16 at 2:30 p.m.

 

 

Audition Preparation: One contemporary Broadway pop tune with accompaniment. Bring sheet music in the correct key, an accompanist will be provided. If director is unfamiliar with your work, please prepare a comic monologue. There will be cold readings as well.

 

Character descriptions:

Sonia Walsh: 30s - 40s leading lady with a strong low register. Sonia is a New Yorker, a lyricist and somewhat offbeat.

 

Vernon Gersch: 30s - 40s leading man with a G on top. Vernon is a composer (piano playing is a plus, but not a necessity), a New Yorker and has a dry sense of humor.

 

6 additional roles: 3 men and 3 women who are the "Greek Chorus" or alter-egos to Sonia and Vernon. Must be good at harmonizing and ensemble work.

 

Director: Jacqi Loewy directed Weathervane's 2009 production of Man of La Mancha.  Her prior WCP directorial credits include The Full Monty, The Rocky Horror Show, The Last Five Years, Proof, The Fantasticks and The Laramie Project.  She directed the world premiere of Faye Sholiton's V-E Day for Dobama Theatre and the Cleveland Play House's Next Stage series. Among her numerous local directing assignments were productions of Constellations (Case Western Reserve University), Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill and The Fantasticks (Lyric Opera Cleveland), The Eight: Reindeer Monologues (Cleveland Public Theatre) and Speed-the-Plow (at The University of Akron).  She was the artistic supervisor and primary stage manager for the longest-running show in Cleveland history, Tony n' Tina's Wedding, at the Hanna Theatre at Playhouse Square.  She is a member of Actors' Equity Association.

 

Musical Director: Jonathan Swoboda is the Music Director for the Kent State University School of Theatre and Dance. He has just completed his second year on the faculty. In addition to teaching, Jonathan has music directed KSU's productions of A New Brain, Jane Eyre, Rent and Oklahoma! as well as Porthouse Theatre's productions of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum and Annie Get Your Gun. Jonathan is a graduate with High Distinction from the University of Michigan School of Music and holds a Masters degree from the University of Nebraska. He has music directed more than 75 productions throughout the country including numerous national tours. He was an Assistant Director for Purdue Musical Organizations, at Purdue University, directing numerous vocal and instrumental ensembles. As a pianist, Jonathan is equally at home in the classical world as both a soloist and accompanist. More recently, Jonathan spent three years as a Resident Music Director for PCPA Theaterfest in California, and he toured as the Featured Keyboard Artist for the internationally known performing ensemble Mannheim Steamroller. Jonathan is excited and happy to be a part of the Weathervane family. 

 

Weathervane Playhouse is committed to non-traditional casting.
