PHILIPPE LEFEBVRE has been organiste-titulaire of Notre Dame Cathedral in
Paris since 1985. He discovered the organ at age 16 and was encouraged by
Pierre Cochereau, then Organist of Notre Dame, he begin his studies in organ
and improvisation at the Lille Conservatory and later at the Paris
Conservatory. In 1971, Mr. Lefebvre was awarded the first prize in organ and
improvisation from the Paris National Conservatory as well as first prizes
in counterpoint and fugue. He won first prize in the Lyon International
Improvisation Competition in 1972 and, one year later, he was awarded the
prestigious Grand Prix du Chartres for improvisation in the 1973 Chartres
Cathedral International Organ Competition.

In 1976, Philippe Lefebvre was appointed organiste-titulaire of Chartres
Cathedral. In 1985, he left Chartres to become one of the principal
organists at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. He shares responsibilities at
the great Notre Dame Cavaillé-Coll with organists Olivier Latry and
Jean-Pierre Leguay, both of whom have performed at the College of the Holy
Cross on past concert seasons. Philippe Lefebvre is also currently Professor
of Improvisation at the Paris Conservatory. Two years ago, he was appointed
the first manager of the staff of Notre Dame Cathedral.

>From 1980-2003, Philippe Lefebvre served as Director of the National
Conservatory of Lille. Under his leadership, this important school of music,
theater and dance provided instruction for 1700 French and foreign
students. As a native of this region, he also devotes himself to the
restoration of historic organs and the building of new instruments. For two
years he has taught Improvisation at the Conservatoire National de Paris. He
has given solo recitals around the world, and also with orchestra for many
important music festivals, and has produced numerous recordings on the
FY-RCA label, including the complete works of several French composers. Mr.
Lefebvre has served on many international competition juries for both
improvisation and interpretation throughout Europe.
