On Monday, May 3, FIRST MONDAYS invites you to view 17th century Rome
through the eyes of Artemesia Gentileschi, the foremost female painter of
the Renaissance. Sally Groth, Michael Regnier, Nick Koesters, Courtney
Nelson and Agnes Hermann are featured in this tale of love and betrayal
adapted by Jean Seitter Cummins from the novel ARTEMISIA by Alexandra
Lapierre.

Artemesia Gentileschi was born into a family of painters and artisans. She
grew up working as an apprentice in her father’s studio and seemed destined
to inherit his greatness. But when she is raped at 17 by her father’s
partner, the notorious Agostino Tassi, her life, according to the standard
of the times is over.

Instead of sinking into obscurity, Artemisia fights for her honor in the
papal courts, insisting even under torture that she has been raped and
demanding punishment for the man who dishonored her. Her courage and her
unusual skills enabled her to rise like a Phoenix from the ashes of disgrace
to become one of the most sought after artists of the Renaissance.

Artemisisa will be read at 7:00 p.m. at The Alcazar, the landmark residence
at 2450 Derbyshire, just at the top of Cedar Hill in the Cedar-Fairmount
neighborhood. Admission is $5 at the door. The reading will be followed by
a discussion of the work of both Gentileschis – father and daughter, led by
art historian Patricia Ashton.

Park in the street or in metered lots next to Night Town or behind Starbuck’
s and Bruegger’s Bagels. Call 321-5400 to arrange handicapped parking on
the day of the program.
