2010 ROBERTO OCASIO LATIN JAZZ CAMP LINKS MUSIC AND DANCE

            Cleveland, Ohio – The Roberto Ocasio Foundation today announced
that student enrollment is underway for the sixth annual Roberto Ocasio
Latin Jazz Music Camp, July 11-16, at Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory
of Music (Berea/Cleveland, Ohio) under the direction of Artist-In-Residence,
Bobby Sanabria, world renowned leader in the Latin and jazz fields as a
multi-Grammy-nominated drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger,
bandleader, producer and educator.  The resident camp is for music students
in grades 8-12 (including 2010 graduates), all instruments—percussion
(including Afro-Cuban and Brazilian), drum set, brass, woodwinds, piano, and
all other instruments.  The year’s camp is also open to middle and
high-school students of dance to learn or expand Latin-dance skills under
the instruction of Eileen Torres, internationally recognized salsa
instructor, entertainer, producer, historian, and educator.
            The music program includes the technical aspects of playing,
composition, and improvisation in the various styles in Latin jazz, the
history of the continuum, and analysis of the rhythmic aspects (in
particular, la clave).  Sanabria and faculty provide group and individual
instruction, rehearsals, jam sessions, nightly music presentations, field
trips, Latin-jazz activities, and a public recital concert.  The Latin-dance
curriculum, overlapping with selected classes in the music program, will
include social and folkloric dances as well as a study of the evolution of
Latin dance, its pioneers and masters.  Prerequisite for both programs is
middle-school-and-above levels of general music and dance background.  Jazz
and Latin-dance studies are not required but helpful.  The week’s tuition
($550) covers all costs (instruction, materials, activities, room and board)
excluding travel.
            Application deadline is June 10 (tuition-discount deadline is
extended to May 30).  Time payment and sponsorship arrangements are
available as well as limited scholarship and financial-assistance

Bobby Sanabria has performed with a veritable Who’s Who in the world of
jazz and Latin music, as well as with his own critically acclaimed
ensembles.   His diverse recording and performing experience includes work
with such legendary figures as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Ray Barretto,
Candido, Paquito D’Rivera, Charles McPherson, Mongo Santamaria, Chico
O’Farrill, Henry Threadgill, and the Father of Afro-Cuban Jazz, Mario Bauzá.
Featured on numerous Grammy-nominated albums, including The Mambo Kings
soundtrack, Bobby’s own big-band CDs, “Big Band Urban Folktales” and
“Afro-Cuban Dream,” were nominated for main-stream Grammys as Best Latin
Jazz Album of 2007 and 2001, “Folktales” also winning the 2008 Jazz
Journalists Association Award.  Bobby was honored as “2005 Percussionist of
the Year” by readers of DRUM! Magazine and has received recognition for his
work in radio and television, including award-winning documentaries for PBS,
BRAVO, and The Smithsonian.  He was honored in 2006 with a permanent NYC
street dedicated to him on the renowned Bronx Walk of Fame in recognition of
his work and contributions that have made a difference throughout the world.
Bobby is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and a recipient of its
prestigious Faculty Association Award.  A leader in the Afro-Cuban and jazz
fields as both drummer and percussionist, he is considered one of the
world’s foremost performers, educators and articulate scholars of la
tradición.  He is a professor at New York City’s famed New School University
and the Manhattan School of Music in the jazz and contemporary music
programs.  His recording, “Kenya Revisited,” with the MSM Orchestra received
a 2009 Latin Grammy® nomination.  Bobby also writes for national
publications, is a frequently featured guest on “NPR This Weekend,” and
recently was a consultant and a featured artist in the four-part
documentary, “Latin Music U.S.A.,” broadcast nationwide for PBS in fall
2009.   Mr. Sanabria proudly endorses LP (Latin Percussion), Remo drum
heads, Sabian cymbals, Tama drums, and Vic Firth sticks and mallets.
