Genres are fiction (short stories or selections from your novel; they
may be in-progress, in rough draft form or at any stage of the
writing); also screenplays and stage plays; and literary nonfiction
(essay, nonfiction book or memoir in-progress, rough draft or any
stage of your writing).
WORKSHOP A AND B DESCRIPTION:
HOUR ONE: "How to Tell A Story." We cover "thinking like a writer,"
plot, creating believable characters, dialogue, setting, and how to
get published. (One topic each for six weeks.)
HOUR TWO: We workshop your manuscripts. Each student receives a one
hour intensive workshopping of his or her manuscript from fellow
students and Scott Lax, including written comments from Scott and
other students. (One student each for six weeks.)
WORKSHOP REQUIREMENTS: Students must submit 5 to 15 pages of double,
spaced, page-numbered fiction or literary nonfiction. Please use Times
New Roman or similar font for your manuscripts. Send by e-mail or
regular mail in advance of workshop unless other arrangements are
made. Students must be 18 years or older. You will retain all rights
to your written work.
This is a unique and fun workshop, one in which students have a chance
to learn or brush up on craft, get valuable feed-back from their
fellow writers and the instructor, learn to "think like a writer," and
gain the confidence to tell stories through the written word. Please
remember that this is where you improve; don't worry about perfecting
your writing.
