Annie Opens June 24

On June 24-27, 2010, the wonderful story about Little Orphan Annie, Annie,
will be presented by the Canal Fulton Players at the United Methodist
Church of Canal Fulton, 363 West Cherry Street, Canal Fulton, Ohio. Cast as
that wonderful little munchkin who stole the hearts of many during the
Depression is Kristina Currans of Apple Creek, Ohio. Kristina has already
reminded many involved with the theatre of one of the Players’ veteran actresses,
Lisa Van Gaasbeek, who normally sports high top sneakers to the knee and a
wide variety of bohemian outfits to rehearsal. When Kristina showed up for
the first rehearsal, she had on high top sneakers to the knee and a
bohemian dress. She brings a powerful voice and an infectious smile to this
production. The chemistry between Matt King, who plays Daddy Warbucks, Olivia
Durell, who plays Grace Ferrell, and her is excellent.
Jackie Piatt plays the irascible and morally corrupt Miss Hannigan, the
owner of the orphanage where Annie lives before she is discovered by Oliver
Warbucks’ assistant, Grace Ferrell, who is played by Olivia Durell. Olivia
is a recent graduate from Northwest High School and has played lead roles in
Oklahoma and Little Abner at the high school. Playing Hannigan’s son,
Rooster, is Bryan Steffee, a 2009 graduate of Northwest High School. His
henchwoman in crime, Lilly St. Regis, “like the hotel” is being played by Stacey
Pasternak, a senior from Wadsworth. Drake, the loyal butler, is being
played by Ben Currans, who just happens to be the father of our star. Sandy,
the dog, is being played by Ray Olivera, last seen as the King in Once Upon
a Mattress.
Playing Oliver Warbucks is Director Matt King, who is being helped in this
directorial debut by Producer-Executive Director David Van Gaasbeek. Matt
has cut his hair short so the cast will not be stunned when he finally
shaves the head to resemble Daddy Warbucks.
Rounding out the Orphans who live and dream with Annie are Gracyn Loper as
Duffy, Hunter Rapp as July, Katelyn Zeitz as Molly, Kenidee Zentiska as
Pepper, Debbie Liknes as Kate, Addi Bair as Tessie, Lisa Gabel, Lauren
Stover, Lily Bair, Xavere Baker, and Emma Canfield.
Rounding out the adult parts are Mike Groom, Maggie Leatherman, John
Steiner, Jena Bair, Jarod Hare, Duane Acker, Josh Rowe, Tyler Brewer, Rachel
Farley, Heidi Knight, Amiee Jarzenski and Brittany Marquardt.
“This is a monumental task and we have a great deal of support for these
people as they key in on Opening Night (June 24),” said Mr. Van Gaasbeek.
This is only the second time that a Canal Fulton Players’ play has opened on
a Thursday night. The last play to do that was Rommel and Patton in July,
2006. This is the first play to have more than two actors under the age
of thirteen involved in the play. The last play to do that was Man of La
Mancha.
The keyboardist is Margie Metcalf from Wadsworth. She will be supported by
drummer Brad Palmer. Choreography is being done by Anita Artzner, who last
was seen as Myrtle Mae Simmons in Harvey. The Musical Director is our Miss
 Hannigan, Jackie Piatt.
Annie, which is a Musical Theatrical International production written by
Charles Strouse, will be performed in the Fellowship Hall Theatre on June
24-27, 2010. The theatre, aware of sight problems in the past, has arranged
the seating in such a way that there will be good seating all away around.
It will be very similar to theatre in the semi-round which was used during
Bus Stop, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Crossing Delancey, and On Golden Pond. “
We have two rows of fifteen seats on stage left, four rows of ten seats on
downstage and three rows of ten seats on stage right. All seats are
staggered so vision will not be impaired,” said Mr. Van Gaasbeek. “We are also
doing Environmental Theatre so the audiences can get into the action.”
Curtain for all shows is 7:30 pm.
A dinner theatre will be done on June 26, 2010, starting at 6:30 pm. The
menu will include Beef Bearnise, Mashed Red Potatoes, Stuff Tomato
Florentine, a tossed salad, roll and Fresh Strawberry Surprise for dessert.
Tickets will be $8.00 for adults and $6.00 for seniors and children under
the age of 12 for June 24, 25, and 27. For the dinner theatre on June 26,
the cost is $18.00 and $16.00.
Reservations are highly recommended for all nights.
