HEIGHTS YOUTH THEATRE TO OPEN 2010-2011 SEASON WITH THE MAGIC OF Pippin

University Heights, OH - Heights Youth Theatre (HYT), with the generous support of Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, the Eaton Charitable Fund and the Ohio Arts Council is proud to announce its 2010-20111 season. HYT is opening its upcoming season (October-November, 2010) with Pippin, directed by Nathaniel Motta. Nathaniel directed last season's beloved classic Oliver!

Heights Youth Theatre is made up of youth, ages 6-18, from all over Greater Cleveland. The Theatre produces three full length musicals each year, engaging over 200 youth each season and entertaining thousands. New to our line-up this season will be the non-musical production Our Town (December 2010) directed by Nathaniel Motta.

The season will continue with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (January-February, 2011) directed by Sean Szaller, director of HYT's recent whimsical production of Seussical, and culminate with The Wiz (February-March, 2011), directed by Treva Offutt who engaged us with her larger than life Haitian interpretation of Once on This Island last season.

Says Pamela Fine, Executive Director, we are so excited to have the opportunity to continue to engage our youth performers and our audience members in many new theatrical endeavors and experiences!

Heights Youth Theatre has been in existence for over 55 years, initially being housed at Cain Park and then relocating to Wiley Middle School, to a theater built to equity standards for Heights Youth Theatre. Many believe it to be the oldest children's theater company in the country.

Since 1954, Heights Youth Theatre (HYT) has engaged children and youth in a comprehensive theater experience. The experience at HYT goes beyond the development of musical, technical and acting skills. Young people who participate in the program enjoy a safe, nurturing environment and a cooperative learning experience as they work together to put on a professional production. The youth involved in the program help in the areas of costumes, set construction, stage crew, stage management and also are musicians in the pit.

In October 2006, Heights Youth Theatre was named in Cleveland Magazine's "Best of Cleveland" issue for tops in children's theater. Several HYT youth have gone on to study Musical Theater/Theater, scenic design and costume design at universities such as Boston University, Carnegie Mellon, NYU Tisch School, University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Ithaca College and Skidmore; some have attended summer programs at Interlochen Arts Academy, Fairmount Performing Arts Camp, Stage Door Manor, Carnegie Mellon and Northwestern and others have gone on to perform on Broadway in shows such as the recent tony award winning Hair, Mama Mia, Spring Awakening, Wicked and the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
