A study was conducted utilizing a patient pool of 20,000 United  States
citizens from the National Health and Nutrition Study. This group of  
subjects
had not been pre-screened for cardiovascular disease and/or  
periodontitis(Gum Disease) and the findings within this group could be  generalized to the 
population as a whole.
This study by Dr. DeStefano  indicated that (when all other risk factors 
were
statistically adjusted out)  individuals with periodontitis(Gum Disease)  
or those who were  edentulous(missing all their teeth) had a 72% higher risk 
for  cardiovascular disease than those without these findings.
 
The risk of cerebral vascular incidents (stroke) has also been studied  
separately in
relation to levels of alveolar bone loss. Full mouth  radiographic surveys 
have
been examined in different studies by Syrjanen,  Grau and Beck and 
periodontal
bone levels and the number of missing teeth  tabulated in relation to 
stroke rates.
The studies demonstrated (adjusting  for all other risk factors) that 
subjects
expressing tooth loss and  periodontal bone loss while in their thirties 
were 2.8
times more prone to  suffering a stroke than individuals with minimal or no 
bone
loss.
